United States Department of Agriculture
4NRCS
Natural Resources Conservation Service
351 7th Street
P. O. Box 937
Meeker, CO 81641
970 -878 -5628 -OFFICE
970 -878 -3730 -FAX
SUBJECT: United Companies - Berry Gravel Pit DATE: March 6, 2002
TO: Greg Lewicky FILE CODE:
Following are additional recommendations concerning the suitability of the
overlying soil for reclamation purposes on the proposed expansion area of the Berry Pit
one mile east of Meeker, operated by United Companies.
The topsoil and upper subsoil are suitable for utilization during the reclamation of
this pit. Soil mapping unit 11, which occurs on the perimeter slopes of the proposed pit
expansion area has limited suitable, strippable topsoil/subsoil varying from 0 to 6 inches
in depth. The suitability is dependent upon the rock content at the surface, as this is a
shallow soil over gravel.
Soil mapping units 33, 63, and 101, which are deep soils, have significant topsoil
and subsoil resources which should be stripped 20 to 24 inches deep and saved for
reclamation of the site.
Another concern at the current pit and proposed expansion area, is the presence
of the noxious weed, leafy spurge. Other noxious weeds may also be present or invade
the site in the future. A weed management plan should be developed which will outline
an aggressive treatment program during the pit mining period, as well as continuing
treatment after the site has been reclaimed.
Alvin L. or's
District Conservationist
The Natural Resource Conservation Service works in partnership with the American People
to conserve and sustain natural resources on private lands An Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer.
