Williams and Weiss Consulting, LLC
5255 Ronald Reagan Boulevard, Ste. 220
Johnstown, CO 80534
September 25, 2015
Ioana Comaniciu
State Engineer's Office
1313 Sherman Street, Room 818
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Amendment to 2015 Substitute Water Supply Plan for the J-2 Contracting Company's Journey
Ventures Gravel Pit, M-2008-080
Dear Ms. Comaniciu,
Williams and Weiss Consulting, LLC is submitting an amendment to the Journey Ventures Pit, Substitute
Water Supply Plan (WDID 0102541) and would like to apply an existing credit of $257 (receipt no. 3669004)
toward the cost of filing this amendment. Journey Ventures intends to begin dewatering operations in
October, 2015 to facilitate the construction of a slurry wall around the mining operation. The dewatering
water will be pumped into a silt pond and recharge pond located on the south-east corner of the property. As
part of this operation, the amount of exposed surface water will increase from approximately 0.12 acre-feet to
0.36 acre-feet. The amount of mined product is not expected to increase beyond the original estimate of
250,000 tons.
This amendment serves two purposes;
• Update the existing SWSP's projected depletions to the South Platte River as a result of the increased
exposed surface area
• Provide a description of the dewatering activities and the plan for meeting the resulting lagged
depletions
In addition to this SWSP amendment, J-2 Contracting Company is in the process of securing a bond in the
amount $349,524 as required by the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety. It is expected to be in place
by October 1, 2015.
Water Usage and Updated Consumptive Use:
The consumptive use at Journey Ventures is comprised of losses from evaporation, water retained in sand and
gravel removed from the site, water used for dust control, and water pumped to the batch plant. Due to the
expected increase in exposed surface water, the Evaporative Losses portion of the original plan has been
updated as follows.
Evaporative Losses_
The total proposed exposed groundwater surface within the Journey Ventures Pit will increase from the
original 0.12 acres to 0.36 acres to account for dewatering operations. Table 1 calculates the evaporative
losses from the Journey Ventures Pit projected for the period of April 2015 through March 2016, showing the
increase in surface area beginning in October 2015. Table 2 identifies the expected operational losses through
March 2016, and the combined water usage for the above demands is given in Table 3.
Lagged Depletions:
For the original SWSP, the IDS AWAS Model (version 1.5.84) was used to calculate lagged depletions
to the South Platte River. The model was executed in Effective SDF mode, using a stream depletion
factor of 120 as obtained from plate -6 of Hydrogeologic characteristics of the valley -fill aquifer in the
Greeley reach of the South Platte River valley, Colorado (Hurr and Schneider, 1973, USGS Open -File
1
