Technical Revision
Boettcher Sand Stone Quarry
Permit No. M-1977 - 345
Holcim respectfully submits a Technical Revision for the Boettcher Sandstone Quarry,
Permit No M-1977-345
The property was permitted in 1977 and was quarried intermittently since then. The
quarry was never mined to the full extent and as a result it was partially reclaimed on
the south side. As the Fort Collins Plant was shut down in 2002, the operation at the
Boettcher Sand Stone Quarry had not resumed. Since then, Holcim tried to sell their
rights for the mineral and mining of the deposit, but was unsuccessful and has now
decided to conduct final reclamation at the site.
The technical revision is in regards to the reclamation concept. As the deposit was not
fully mined, the reclamation concept in the existing permit cannot be completed as
permitted. Holcim (US) Inc. respectfully submits a revised concept for the area where
there is a high wall. All loose and available material within the disturbed area will be
pushed in such a manner to reduce the exposed quarry wall and insure stability.
• It should be noted that the existing highwall (1 H:1 V) has been exposed for at
least 20 years without any degradation and is considered stable.
• All work will be conducted within the permitted boundary and sloping of material
will be done in such a manner to prevent erosion.
• The plan will be to reduce the slope from the existing 1 H:1 V Slope to a 21-1:1 V
slope utilizing existing loose material with the permit boundary.
• Holcim seeks a variance from the 31-1:1 V to a 21-1:1 V slope.
• Best Management Practices (BMP's) will be implemented to provide drainage
away from the reclaimed area and to minimize any runoff on the newly disturbed
area of reclamation in the form of silt fences, hay bales and drainage ditches.
The concept is shown in the drawings below— Boettcher Sand Stone Quarry and
Cross Section. Once sloped, the area will be topsoiled (if available) and seeded. Also,
a fence (T-Post/ 3 strand barbed wire) will be installed along the crest line and posted
with signs indicating "Danger— Highwall"
