The sandstone is a cliff former, and the cliffs and
talus elopes extend high above the area to be mined. The material to be mined initially is
a colluvium derived from the sandstone, and contains many sandstone blocks. Fractured
sandstone bedrock will probably be encountered at some depth into the knob, the operator will
blast as necessary to excavate the material.
There is a good cover of grasses and shrubs on the level area on top of the knob, and fair
vegetative cover on the slopes. Species observed included Sage, Indian Rice Grass, and
several wheat grasses (Bearded Bluebunch, Griffith's). The surface soils at this location
are too rocky and thin to justify salvaging for reclamation, however, crusher fines and
unconsolidated earth exposed in mining will provide a useful plant growth medium. The
Division will require revegetation of the disturbed area (no revegetation'had been proposed
by the applicant). The Division recommends the following seed mix:
Species
Bluebunch wheatgrass
Western wheatgrass
Crested wheatgrass
Indian Ricegrass
lbs. of Pure Live
Seed per acre
5.0
2.9
2.0
1.0
These rates are for drill seeding and must be doubled if the seed is broadcast. Clean straw
mulch is to be applied at a rate of 2 tons per acre and crimped into the soil or secured with
netting. If the operator elects to use a different seed mix at the time of reclamation, the
alternate mix must first be approved by the Division.
At the start of the operation, there will be limited level ground available between the knob
to be mined and the county road. Also, the road is not appreciably built up above the
surrounding ground surface, so will not effectively serve as a dike between operations and
Slater Creek. For these reasons, the operator will have to take care to avoid siltation or
other disturbance of the creek. The Division will require that a ditch be excavated along
the west side of the road to route run-off from the disturbed area to the sediment control
structures described in the application (alternatively, the road could be built up so that
it would serve as a dike, as indicated in the application).
All final slopes developed in soil or unconsolidated material must be graded no steeper than
2H:1V. Slopes developed in competent bedrock may be steeper but should blend with the
natural terrain, and must be stable. All level areas and graded slopes must be revegetated.
The Division will provide a conditional approval letter, with a list of stipulations, under
separate cover. OPERATIONS MAY NOT COMMENCE UNTIL THE PERMIT IS ISSUED.
I & E Contact Address cc: Carl Mount, DMG
❑ CE
NAME Ben Austin ❑ BL
OPERATOR Bartlett, Inc. ❑ FS
STREET P.O.
