County Road 92 Ditch
When the Dorchester Mine was started in approximately 1980,the wash plant was ready to clean the
first mine run coal. However, the refuse disposal area was not developed and could not receive the
refuse from the wash plant. Instead of stopping the mining Dorchester utilized other areas to dispose of
the refuse. One such area was approximately the one-quarter mile portion of County Road 92 (CR92)
north of the Dorchester Mine portal area in Section 19,T20S R69W. This disposal was utilized to widen
the road and create a more uniform grade. Later when the maximum amount of refuse had been
disposed in this area the refuse was disposed along the south shoulder of County Road 15 in Sections 17
and 9,T20S R69W. This disposal stopped on County Road 15 approximately one-half mile from
Colorado Highway 67.
In 1981 Dorchester was issued a violation, CV1981011, for refuse disposal outside the permit area.
There are ten photograph references to this violation that have been posted on the Division of
Reclamation, Mining, and Safety(DRMS) Laserfiche web site.1,2.3,^,5,6,7,8,9,1° CV1981011 photograph has the
caption of Topsoiling over refuse disposal outside permit area and it is dated 2-26-81. Other
photographs show the use of a backhoe or auger to inspect for refuse under the topsoil layer. After
CR92 was reconstructed in the disposal area it had a roadside ditch approximately four feet wide and
two feet deep, and the ditch remained fairly stable for many years. In about 2012 the ditch was
observed to have some erosion and sediment was starting to be deposited at the gate area on CR92.
I ,c
A -FAX
Photo 1. The
depth and width of the ditch have increased to the present condition shown in Photo 2.
