• Water from eight sampling sites on tributaries in the mine plan area was sampled and analyzed
for major chemical constituents and trace elements for baseline conditions. Table 4.8-11 gives a
cross-reference for historical sampling sites S-1 through S-14 against current NPDES site
locations. Tables 2.7-15 through 2.7-18 present analyses of major chemical constituents found in
tributaries on the Trapper Mine area. Tables 2.7-15 through 2.7-18 give the results from the initial
three samples of the pre -operational monitoring. Figures 2.7-16 through 2.7-18 show the ranges
of constituents for three sets of analyses.
Surface water on the mine site is the same chemical type as that in the Yampa and Williams Fork
Rivers. Dominant cations include calcium, sodium, and magnesium, while dominant anions are
bicarbonate and sulfate with some chloride present. Concentrations are generally higher than
those in the Yampa and Williams Fork Rivers. This is expected from lower attitude intermittent
(and ephemeral) drainages. TDS values are generally an order of magnitude higher than those
of the major rivers.
Figures 2.7-16 and 2.7-18 also show the national primary and secondary drinking water
standards and the limits for continuously used irrigation water. TDS exceeds the secondary
drinking water knits of 500 mg/I in most samples; the sulfate limit of 250 mgA is exceeded at sites
•
8-1, S-2 and SS; the iron limit of .3 mgA is exceeded at sites S-1, S-2, S-3 and S-5; and the
manganese font of .05 rrgll is exceeded at stations S-1 and S-2. Irrigation standards are
exceeded for ion (sites S-2, S-3 and S-5), sodium absorption rate (site S-3), manganese (site S-
2), lithium (site S-2), and molybdenum (sites S-1 and S-2).
• 2-418
