4
Zinc (Zn) concentrations vary slightly between overburden located in the western
portion (1-15 ppm) and eastern portion (2-26 ppm) of the proposed permit area.
Both areas are well below the level of Zn considered unsuitable for plant growth
(Workman, 1980). Soil surface and subsurface concentrations of Zn are also very
low (<0.5 to 6 ppm)(Table 2.7-6). Zn is not expected to present any problem for
plant establishment.
Boron concentration in the overburden samples (Table 2.7-8) did not exceed the
desirablemaximum of 5 ppm after weathering (Wyo. DEQ Guidelines, 1976). There-
fore boron toxicity is not expected to occur in using overburden materials as a
growth medium for plants.
The parameters analyzed indicate that no properties are present that would
adversely affect plant growth with the possible exception of ESP if the overbur-
den were used as the sole plant growth medium. However, as mentioned earlier,
all overburden will be retopsoiled thereby reducing the chance of any adverse
affect upon plant growth that the overburden could exert.
2-391
SEP 21932
