July 29, 2015 C-1996-084/Lorencito Canyon Mine LDS
Inspection Topic Summary
NOTE: Y=Inspected N=Not Inspected R=Comments Noted V=Violation Issued NA Not Applicable
NA - Air Resource Protection Y - Roads
N - Availability of Records Y - Reclamation Success
NA - Backfill & Grading R - Revegetation
R - Excess Spoil and Dev. The weather was clear and dry, although the summer to date had been unusually wet. The work
done in April and May had left the site in good condition, with new vegetation on many of the re -seeded areas.
EXCESS SPOIL and DEVELOPMENT WASTE — Rule 4.09
Placement; Drainage Control; Surface Stabilization:
Fills 7, 8 and 9 were stable and well vegetated.
HYDROLOGIC BALANCE - Rule 4.05
Drainage Control 4.05.1, 4.05.2, 4.05.3; Siltation Structures 4.05.5, 4.05.6; Discharge Structures 4.05.7, 4.05.10;
Diversions 4.05.4; Effluent Limits 4.05.2; Ground Water Monitoring 4.05.13; Surface Water Monitoring 4.05.13;
Drainage — Acid and Toxic Materials 4.05.8; Impoundments 4.05.6, 4.05.9; Stream Buffer Zones 4.05.18:
All ponds were inspected. Embankments and spillways were in good condition. Pond 8 was discharging at
a trickle; the other ponds were holding water but below the discharge level. Several of the flume boxes will need
to be cleaned in the near future. A small amount of water had ponded next to the road above the shrub plot, above
the inlet to culvert C5.
REVEGETATION — Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
The vegetation around the site appeared to be green and healthy. Seeds had germinated in the recently
seeded areas, with the pond cleanings area particularly verdant. Some of the new vegetation appeared to be crop
wheat which may have volunteered, or have been included in the seed mix as a stabilization species; in either case
it was effectively stabilizing the seeded slopes and would not represent a problem unless it was persistent or
dominant 3 years after seeding (so, 2018).
Arcadis were scheduled to undertake some vegetation sampling in the first week of August, with their
attention to be focused on the drainages to ponds 9a and 9b, and the area above pond 5.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 1
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 0
Page 2 of 12
