RE: Corrective Action Responses - Implementing Weed Control
for Rinn Valley, Carbon Valley, and Firestone sites
SITES
Rinn Valley - As mentioned above, we chopped down weed trees at Rinn Valley in May, prior to the
inspection. We cut down quite a number of Russian Olive trees and some tamarisk at the site.
Additional weed control and reclamation work planned for Rinn Valley this growing season includes:
- Using a weed eater to cut down the thistle weeds around the processing plants and along WCR 7.
- Chopping down and removing many more trees and shrubs throughout the site.
- Bulldozing to do an extensive de -vegetation process around Phase 3 and the south side of Phase 2.
The areas will be graded, topsoiled, and prepped for seeding with the approved seed mix.
Carbon Valley - The berm along the north side of Carbon Valley has been mowed and sprayed more than
once. Other areas have been mowed and sprayed as well (see photos).
Additional weed control work planned for Carbon Valley this growing season includes:
- Mow and bulldoze for weed control along the edges of the pit.
- Bulldoze any weeds on pit floor.
- Topsoiling areas after being cleaned -up and prep for seeding.
Firestone - The berm along the west side has been sprayed, bulldozed and graded, eliminating the weeds
on it. It will be replanted with a permitted seed mixture. Other areas have been sprayed and mowed as
well (see photos).
Additional weed control work planned for Firestone this growing season includes:
- More mowing/bulldozing and clean-up of topsoil and overburden stockpiles.
- Berm on east end of mine area to be rounded for easier mowing and seeding in future.
- Round any other bermed areas for future seeding and mowing.
CONCLUSION
We have weed control plans for our mine sites, which have all been approved by the Division, and in
conducting all the weed control measures mentioned above, we have implemented the plans. And in so
doing, we are controlling the spread of weeds at (and from) our permitted sites. We realize that it is a
constant battle and thus why we have given the Division a list of additional weed control measures that
shall take place this growing season. We will also continue to revegetate topsoil piles and reclaimed
areas with our approved seed mixes and work on establishing self-sustaining, viable, and desirable
vegetation on our sites.
If you need anything else for this Corrective Action Response, please contact me at 303-286-2247 or
Imshults@lgeverist.com.
Sincerely,
Lyn er Shults
Y Y
Regulatory Manager
attachments
- Agfinity invoice
- Charles Shane invoice
- site photos
cc: L.G.
