7/22/2015
STATE OF
fl
COLORADO
State.co.us Executive Branch Mail -Re: Santiago Mine application to prospect
Cunningham - DNR, Michael<michaela.cunningham@state.co.us>
Re: Santiago Mine application to prospect
1 message
Danny Tomlinson <dtomlinson@msn.com> Wed, Jul 22, 2015 at 11:26 AM
To: michael.cunningham@state.co.us
Cc: Lisa Leben <Ileben@co.clear-creek.co.us>, Cynthia Neely <ccneely@yahoo.com>
Good morning, Mr. Cunningham - I appreciate the opportunity to make some brief comments about the recent
application by Mr. Hilgers to conduct mining operations at the Santiago Mine and Mill site above Georgetown,
Colorado. My wife and I have been active with the Historic District Lands Commission, which is a partnership
with Clear Creek County, Georgetown and Silver Plume. Also we have worked with Historic Georgetown and the
Santiago Mill Stewards to preserve and protect the unique asset known as the Santiago Mill.
My family has lived in Clear Creek County since 1956 and I have been privileged to enjoy the rich cultural and
historic heritage of the area all my life. We began 4 -wheeling to the Waldorf/Argentine/Santiago area soon after
moving to Clear Creek County.
The Santiago is indeed an historic treasure. The condition of the mill, the fact that nearly all the original milling
equipment is intact and the fact that it has been and will be restored and preserved makes it unique to
Colorado's mining heritage and especially the history of Clear Creek County. The fact that the Santiago is
accessible only by 4 -wheel drive significantly reduces the risk of vandalism. Any road improvement, as
suggested by Mr. Hilgers, would seriously jeopardize the site. As a Mill Steward, I have had the opportunity to
visit with several hundred visitors to the site and to a person, they love the Santiago and come to the Santiago
to share the Mill with friends and family. These are not folks that might vandalize the Mill or "take a piece of it
home with them". My experience is that 4 -wheelers and Jeep Clubs have a real appreciation for our state's
beauty and will go above and beyond to preserve and protect that beauty and heritage.
My understanding also is that the adit for the Santiago #1 is actually on land owned by the USFS.
I urge you in the strongest possible terms to not allow road improvement and to help us preserve a special part
of Colorado's history. Thank you very much for your consideration and please contact me if you have
comments or questions. Thank you very much!
PS - if you haven't actually been to the Santiago, I would be pleased to take you in my Jeep to the site.
Danny Tomlinson
Tomlinson & Associates
Cell (303) 638-6509
dtomlinson@msn.com
www.lobbycolorado.com
follow us at @dltomlinson
On Jul 21, 2015, at 6:16 PM, Cynthia Neely <ccneely@yahoo.com> wrote:
Dear Mr. Cunningham,
The Historic District Public Lands Commission, a planning partnership of Clear Creek County, the
Towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume, History Colorado, the Colorado Division of Parks and
Wildlife and Historic Georgetown Inc, have long had an interest in the preservation of the Santiago
Mill.
