Twentymile Coal, LLC (TC)
Geologic and Engineering Data Report
Lease by Modification Application — Wolf Creek Reserve April 2014
GEOLOGIC AND GEOGRAPHIC SECTION
A. Legal description of the area
Legal location
A portion of the proposed lease modification application area was previously evaluated and leased
to TC for development and mining of the Wadge Coal Seam. TC is a subsidiary- of Peabody
Energy. The original leasing evaluation and Environmental Assessment (EA CO -016-95-020) were
completed in 1995, and the original lease (COC -54608) was issued to Cyprus Western Coal
Company in February 1996. The Wadge Seam coal lease includes approximately 2,600 acres in
TSN, R86W, Sections 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, and 33. The proposed lease modification tract
boundary includes portions of the previously leased area in Sections 21 and 22, and adds
approximately 100 acres in the SW'/4 of Section 21. The legal description for the proposed lease
modification area adds all federal reserves - COC -54608 (720 acres) and COC -81330 (40 acres) -
lying in the Wolf Creek Seam in the following areas.
Township Range Section
5N 86W Section 21; N''/z, N'/2SE'/4, N'hSW'/4SE'/4, NE'/4 SW'/4, N'/z SE'/4SW'/4,
NW'/4SW'/4
5N 86W Section 22; NW'/4, N'/2SW'/4
This tract contains 760 acres, more or less, in Routt County, Colorado. The majority of the surface
overlying the Land is owned by Twentymile Coal, LLC. A portion of the surface on the eastern
edge of the lease modification area is owned by Ashley Investments.
Map showing general affected area
The general location of the tract is shown on Exhibit A and Plate 2, Map 23. The proposed lease
modification tract is located approximately 18 miles southwest of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and
eleven miles northwest of the town of Oak Creek, Colorado.
B. Geologic characteristics
Generalized lithology of the area is shown in the legend of Plate 6 and on Figure 1.
Overburden/Interburden
Total overburden thickness ranges from 1,200 feet to 1,900 feet above the top of the Wolf Creek
Seam in the lease modification area. Refer to Plate 6 — Overburden drawing.
2. Interburden
Approximately 100 feet to 170 feet of interburden separates the Wolf Creek Seam from the
overlying Wadge Seam in the lease modification area.
C. Coal quality
High heating values and volatile content place the Wolf Creek Seam in a high volatile, group C, bituminous
coal classification. The coal seam splits into four distinct benches toward the east with benches WF1 and
WF2 (as numbered from bottom to top) combining. When coal bench WF4, splits from WF3, the parting
consists of sandstone with shale. When coal bench WF3 splits from WF2, the parting consists primarily of
sandstone. Coal benches WF2 and WF1 have a small dull coal band that separates the benches and ranges
from 0 to 1.5 feet in thickness.
WCR BLM Lease App Geologic & Engineeering Data Report 0414.docx Page 1
