REV <br />0 <br />GCL INSTALLATION SPECIFICATIONS <br />GENERAL <br />THIS SPECIFICATION DEFINES THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINER (GCL) MATERIALS, INSTALLATION AND <br />QUALITY CONTROL ASSOCIATE WITH CRIPPLE CREEK & VICTOR GOLD MINING COMPANY (OWNER) SQUAW GULCH VALLEY LEACH <br />FACILITY (SGVLF), <br />ANY ALTERNATIVES OR EXCEPTIONS TO THIS SPECIFICATION SHALL BE SUBMITTED IN WRITING TO THE OWNER OR ITS <br />DESIGNATED REPRESENTATIVE WITH THE BID. THE ENGINEER MAY MODIFY THESE SPECIFICATIONS BASED ON THE INSTALLATION <br />RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE APPROVED MANUFACTURER. <br />GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINER (GCL) <br />THE GCL SHALL CONSIST OF A LAYER OF NATURAL SODIUM BENTONITE CLAY ENCAPSULATED BETWEEN TWO <br />NON -WOVEN <br />GEOTEXTILES. THE MATERIAL SHALL BE MANUFACTURED <br />BY MECHANICALLY BONDING THE GEOTEXTILES <br />USING <br />A <br />NEEDLE -PUNCHING PROCESS TO ENHANCE FRICTIONAL AND <br />INTERNAL SHEAR STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS. IN <br />ORDER <br />TO <br />MAINTAIN THESE CHARACTERISTICS, NO GLUES, ADHESIVES <br />OR OTHER NON-MECHANICAL BONDING PROCESSES <br />SHALL <br />BE <br />USED IN LIEU OF THE NEEDLE -PUNCHING PROCESS. THEIR <br />USE IN ENHANCING THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF <br />THE GCL <br />IS <br />NOT PERMITTED. <br />GEOTEXTILES (PRE- PRODUCTION) <br />STRESS. <br />-SIDED TEXTURED OR DOUBLE -SIDED TEXTURED) WILL FOLLOW THE <br />MANUFACTURER'S QUALITY CONTROL (MQC) <br />THE MANUFACTURER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING A QUALITY CONTROL PROGRAM TO ENSURE <br />COMPLIANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THIS SPECIFICATION. DOCUMENTATION DESCRIBING THE QUALITY CONTROL PROGRAM <br />SHALL BE MADE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST, TESTING SHALL BE PERFORMED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE METHODS <br />REFERENCED IN THIS SPECIFICATION. <br />THE MANUFACTURER'S QUALITY CONTROL CERTIFICATES SHALL BE SUBMITTED TO THE ENGINEER PRIOR TO, OR WITH, EACH <br />DELIVERY OF MATERIAL. THE QUALITY CONTROL CERTIFICATES SHALL STATE THAT THE FINISHED MATERIAL MEETS THE <br />REQUIREMENTS OF THE SPECIFICATION. IN ADDITION, FOR EACH LOT OF MATERIAL UTILIZED IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THE <br />GCL MATERIAL, THE FOLLOWING SHALL BE SUBMITTED: <br />• BENTONITE MANUFACTURER CERTIFICATION -BENTONITE MANUFACTURER QUALITY DOCUMENTATION FOR THE PARTICULAR <br />LOTS OF CLAY USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE ROLLS DELIVERED. <br />• GEOTEXTILE MANUFACTURER CERTIFICAITON-GEOTEXTILE MANUFACTURER QUALITY CONTROL DOCUMENTATION FOR THE <br />PARTICULAR LOTS OF GEOTEXTILES USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE ROLLS DELIVERED. <br />• GCL MANUFACTURER TRACKING LIST -CROSS-REFERENCING LIST DELINEATING THE CORRESPONDING GEOTEXTILE AND <br />BENTONITE LOTS FOR THE MATERIALS USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE ROLLS DELIVERED. <br />• MANUFACTURING QUALITY CONTROL DATA -THE MANUFACTURING QUALITY CONTROL TEST DATA INDICATING THE ACTUAL <br />TEST VALUES OBTAINED WHEN TESTED FOR THE SPECIFIED MATERIAL PROPERTIES. <br />EITHER MISLABELING OR MISREPRESENTATION OF MATERIALS SHALL BE REASON TO REJECT THOSE PRODUCTS. <br />SUBMITTALS POST -AWARD <br />THE MANUFACTURER SHALL FURNISH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION, IN WRITING, TO THE OWNER PRIOR TO SHIPMENT OF THE <br />GCL MATERIAL. ALL REFERENCES TO THE GCL MATERIAL ALSO INCLUDES THE LOOSE GRANULATED/POWDERED BENTONITE <br />REQUIRED FOR SEAMING OF THE GCL. <br />• SAMPLES OF GCL PROPOSED FOR USE ON THE PROJECT. <br />• GCL MATERIAL PRODUCT DATA SHEET CONFIRMING TYPICAL/MINIMUM MATERIAL PROPERTY VALUES MEET TECHNICAL <br />SPECIFICATIONS. THIS INCLUDES THE BENTONITE AND GEOTEXTILE USED TO PRODUCE THE GCL PRODUCT AND THE <br />BENTONITE TO BE SUPPLIED FOR SEAMING THE GCL PRODUCT. <br />• REFERENCE LIST INDICATING AT LEAST 1,000,OOOm2 OF NEEDLE -PUNCHED GCL PRODUCT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY <br />PRODUCED, <br />• WARRANTIES ON THE SUPPLIED PRODUCTS. <br />THE MANUFACTURER SHALL FURNISH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION, IN WRITING, TO THE OWNER UPON SHIPMENT OF THE <br />GCL MATERIAL: <br />• COPY OF QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL CERTIFICATES ISSUED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND THE THIRD -PARTY <br />INDEPENDENT QUALITY ASSURANCE TESTER. <br />• CERTIFICATION THAT THE MATERIAL DELIVERED TO THE PROJECT COMPLIES WITH THESE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />THE GCL INSTALLER SHALL FURNISH THE FOLLOWING ITEMS, IN WRITING, TO THE OWNER 14 DAYS PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT <br />OF INSTALLATION: <br />• THE INSTALLER'S QUALITY CONTROL MANUAL THAT STATES THE METHODS AND PROCEDURES FOR VERIFYING THE <br />INSTALLATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AND THE MANUFACTURERS' <br />RECOMMENDATIONS. NO GLUES, ADHESIVES OR OTHER NON-MECHANICAL <br />BONDING PROCESS SHALL BE USED IN LIEU OF THE NEEDLE -PUNCH PROCESS. THE NEEDLE -PUNCHED GCL SHALL BE <br />THERMALLY LOCKED, THE THERMAL LOCK PROCESS MUST HEAT SET THE NON -WOVEN FIBERS WHERE THEY PROTRUDE FROM <br />THE SECOND GEOTEXTILE TO MORE PERMANENTLY SECURE THE REINFORCEMENT IN PLACE. OTHER MEANS MAY BE USED TO <br />LOCK THE FIBERS IN PLACE IF THE PROCESS DEMONSTRATES SIMILAR PERFORMANCE TO THE THERMAL LOCK PROCESS. <br />PACKAGING, SHIPMENT AND STORAGE <br />ALL GCL ROLLS SHALL BE PACKAGED IN MOISTURE -TIGHT PLASTIC WRAPPING TO PROTECT THE ROLLS FROM DAMAGE DUE <br />TO SHIPMENT, WATER, SUNLIGHT, AND CONTAMINANTS. THE PROTECTIVE WRAPPING SHALL BE MAINTAINED DURING PERIODS OF <br />SHIPMENT AND STORAGE. THE GCL SHALL BE WOUND AROUND A RIGID CORE WHOSE DIAMETER IS SUFFICIENT TO FACILITATE <br />HANDLING. THE CORES SHALL BE SUFFICIENTLY STRONG TO RESIST COLLAPSE DURING TRANSIT AND HANDLING. <br />THE MANUFACTURER SHALL LABEL EACH ROLL BOTH ON THE GCL ROLL AND ON THE SURFACE OF THE PLASTIC PROTECTIVE <br />SLEEVE. LABELS SHALL BE RESISTANT TO FADING AND MOISTURE DEGRADATION TO ENSURE LEGIBILITY AT THE TIME OF THE <br />INSTALLATION. AT A MINIMUM, THE ROLL LABELS SHALL IDENTIFY THE LENGTH AND WIDTH OF ROLL, TOTAL WEIGHT OF ROLL, <br />PRODUCT NAME, PRODUCTION LOT NUMBER, AND INDIVIDUAL ROLL NUMBER. <br />THE SHIPPING AND HANDLING OF THE GCL MATERIAL SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MANUFACTURER'S <br />RECOMMENDATIONS, EACH ROLL SHALL BE INSPECTED UPON DELIVERY TO THE PROJECT TO DETERMINE IF THE PACKAGING <br />OR MATERIAL HAS BEEN DAMAGED DURING SHIPMENT. DAMAGE TO THE PACKAGING MATERIAL SHALL BE REPAIRED WITH <br />WATER-RESISTANT ADHESIVE TAPE TO PREVENT HYDRATION OF THE GCL. DAMAGED ROLLS SHALL BE CLEARLY IDENTIFIED <br />UPON DISCOVERY. DAMAGE TO ROLLS THAT OCCURRED IN TRANSIT MUST IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE <br />MANUFACTURER/SUPPLIER. LOADING AND UNLOADING OF THE GCL MATERIAL SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE <br />MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATION, <br />DURING STORAGE, ROLLS SHALL BE ELEVATED OFF THE GROUND AND ADEQUATELY COVERED TO PROTECT THEM FROM SITE <br />CONSTRUCTION DAMAGE, PRECIPITATION, CHEMICALS, AND ANY OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS THAT MAY DAMAGE THE <br />PROPERTY VALUES OF THE MATERIAL. STORAGE OF THE GCL MATERIALS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE <br />MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS AND IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR. <br />INSTALLATION <br />THE GCL SHALL BE INSTALLED TO THE LIMITS INDICATED ON THE DRAWINGS, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MANUFACTURER'S <br />INSTALLATION GUIDELINES, OR AS DIRECTED BY THE ENGINEER, THE SURFACE UPON WHICH THE GCL MATERIAL WILL BE <br />INSTALLED SHALL BE INSPECTED BY THE GCL INSTALLATION CONTRACTOR AND ENGINEER TO VERIFY THAT THE SURFACE IS <br />ACCEPTABLE FOR GCL PLACEMENT. <br />UPON ACCEPTANCE OF THE SUSGRADE, PARTIES INVOLVED WITH THE INSPECTION SHALL SIGN AN APPROVAL/ACCEPTANCE <br />NOTIFICATION. <br />THE SURFACE OF AREAS TO RECEIVE GCL SHALL BE FREE OF ANGULAR PARTICLES OVER 3/4 INCHES IN DIAMETER AND <br />HARD OBJECTS THAT MAY DAMAGE THE GCL, THE SURFACE SHALL ALSO BE FREE OF ROOTS, STICKS, OR OTHER <br />DELETERIOUS MATERIAL THAT MAY DAMAGE THE GCL. IF EXCESSIVE COARSE MATERIAL IS EXPOSED AT THE SURFACE, ROCK <br />REMOVAL BY APPROPRIATE METHODS OR OTHER SURFACE FINISHING AS DIRECTED BY THE ENGINEER WILL BE REQUIRED. <br />WHERE POSSIBLE, ALL SLOPE PANELS SHOULD BE INSTALLED PARALLEL TO THE MAXIMUM SLOPE. DEPLOYMENT SHALL <br />PROCEED FROM THE HIGHEST ELEVATION TO THE LOWEST TO FACILITATE DRAINAGE IN THE EVENT OF PRECIPITATION. CARE <br />SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE DRAGGING OF THE MATERIAL DURING DEPLOYMENT TO PREVENT DAMAGE FROM <br />THE UNDERLYING SURFACE. A SLIP -SHEET MAY BE USED TO FACILITATE POSITIONING OF THE MATERIAL WHILE ENSURING THE <br />GCL IS NOT DAMAGED FROM THE UNDERLYING SURFACE. <br />OVERLAPS SHALL BE A MINIMUM OF 9 INCHES ON THE PANEL EDGES AND 18 INCHES AT THE PANEL ENDS, THE OVERLAPS <br />SHALL BE FREE FROM "FISH MOUTHS", WRINKLES, OR FOLDS. ALL DIRT, GRAVEL, OR OTHER DEBRIS SHALL BE REMOVED <br />FROM THE OVERLAP. LOOSE GRANULAR BENTONITE SHOULD BE PLACED BETWEEN THE PANEL OVERLAPS AT A RATE OF 1/4 <br />POUND PER LINEAL FOOT (OR AS RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND APPROVED BY THE ENGINEER). <br />DETAIL WORK, DEFINED AS THE SEALING OF THE LINER TO PIPE PENETRATIONS, FOUNDATION WALLS, DRAINAGE STRUCTURES, <br />OR OTHER APPURTENANCES, SHALL BE PERFORMED AS RECOMMENDED BY THE GCL MANUFACTURER. <br />REPAIRS <br />DAMAGED AREAS SHALL BE REPAIRED BY PLACING A PATCH OVER THE DEFECTIVE MATERIAL. THE PATCH MUST OVERLAP THE <br />DAMAGED AREA A MINIMUM OF 18 INCHES ON ALL EDGES. THE EDGES OF THE PATCH SHALL BE ADHERED TO THE DAMAGED <br />PANEL IN A SIMILAR MANNER TO THE TREATMENT OVERLAPS. THE MINIMUM WIDTH OF THE POWDERED BENTONITE SEAM <br />SHALL BE 6 INCHES ON ALL EDGES. IF THE DAMAGED AREA IS POSITIONED ON A SLOPE, THE EDGES OF THE PATCH SHALL <br />BE ADHERED TO THE REPAIRED LINER WITH AN ADHESIVE TO KEEP THE PATCH IN POSITION DURING COVER PLACEMENT, ALL <br />PATCHES SHALL BE DOCUMENTED BY THE CONTRACTOR'S QC SUPERVISOR AND BY THE ENGINEER. <br />GCL COVER (LLDPE) <br />THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ONLY DEPLOY AS MUCH GCL AS CAN BE COVERED BY THE END OF THE DAY. ONLY THOSE ROLLS <br />OF GCL THAT CAN BE INSTALLED AND COVERED SHALL BE UNPACKAGED AND PLACED INTO POSITION. THE EXPOSED EDGE <br />OF THE COVERED GCL SHALL BE PROTECTED WITH WATER-RESISTANT SHEETING UNTIL THE NEXT DAY OF DEPLOYMENT. <br />PANELS THAT ARE DISPLACED DURING LLDPE PLACEMENT SHALL BE ADJUSTED TO THE CORRECT ORIENTATION AND POSITION. <br />THE ADJUSTED PANEL SHOULD THEN BE INSPECTED FOR DAMAGE AND REPAIRED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SPECIFICATIONS. <br />CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO AVOID DAMAGE TO THE GCL BY MAKING SHARP TURNS OR PIVOTS WITH THE LLDPE PLACEMENT <br />EQUIPMENT AS WELL AS SUDDEN STARTS AND STOPS. SOILS, IF REQUIRED, MAY BE PLACED ON THE GCL BY PUSHING WITH <br />A TRACK DOZER OR BY CAREFULLY PLACING IT WITH A LOADER OR BACKHOE. THE USE OF SCRAPERS OR TRUCKS TO <br />PLACE MATERIAL DIRECTLY ONTO THE GCL IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. NO HEAVY VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED TO BE DRIVEN <br />DIRECTLY ON THE GCL UNTIL THE LLDPE AND BASIN DRAINAGE LAYER HAVE BEEN PLACED. WHEN COVERING GCL ON <br />SLOPED AREAS, COVER SOIL, IF REQUIRED, SHALL BE PAUSED UP-SLOPE TO MINIMIZE TENSION ON THE GCL. <br />COMPLETION <br />AT THE COMPLETION OF THE <br />INSTALLATION, <br />THE <br />INSTALLER SHALL PROVIDE A SET OF AS -BUILT DRAWINGS SHOWING THE <br />ACTUAL GCL PANEL LAYOUT, <br />SEAMS; AND <br />THE <br />LOCATION OF MAJOR REPAIRS INCLUDING REPAIRED SEAMS AND CAPPED <br />AREAS.
