PERMIT #: M-2011-009
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: MAC
INSPECTION DATE: June 29, 2015
OBSERVATIONS
The inspection was conducted by Michael Cunningham of the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
(Division). Mike London was present on behalf of IGWT Mining, Inc. The Hector Placer Mine is located
approximately 1 mile south of Alma, Colorado in Park County. The site is permitted for 100 acres and the post -
mining land use is wildlife habitat. The primary commodity mined is gold.
The purpose of this inspection was to follow up on a corrective action issued during the previous inspection
conducted on May 28, 2015. During the May 2015 inspection, the Division observed water seeping from the
south end of the lower settling pond. The lower settling pond receives process water from the sluice plant;
water from the lower settling pond is pumped back to the sluice. The process water was seeping through the
side wall of the settling pond and was also found to be percolating from the ground surface. The Division cited
a problem and required the Operator to reconstruct the earthen embankment, such that it was of a sufficient
height and compaction to eliminate any seepage from the settling pond.
The Operator performed a substantial amount of earth work at the south end of the lower settling pond. The
embankment was raised on the south end by several feet and compaction was achieved through multiple
passes of a wheeled front end loader. In addition, the Operator filled in the low lying area off of the southwest
corner of the settling pond where water was ponding. The Division traversed the south end of the settling
pond and did not observe any areas of seepage. The soils and colluvium around the perimeter of the settling
pond were dry and the Division is satisfied that the Operator has taken the necessary measures to prevent
seepage from the pond. The Division considers the problem to be resolved; however, the Operator should
perform periodic inspections of the pond perimeter to ensure that seepage does not occur in the future.
This concluded the inspection.
