3.0 PLANT COMMUNITIES
As indicated in Section 1.0, a total of seven unique plant communities and / or land use types were
delineated within the vicinity of the proposed project. Fve plant communities and one land use type exist
within ther vegetation study area, while a single community (pinon-juniper woodland and mountain brush)
exists immediately external to this area along the North Fork Gunnison River Valley walls. Boundaries
between plant communities and land use types were delineated from aerial photography and were
confirmed or adjusted through on the ground verification techniques. Results of these delineations are
presented on Map V-1. Acreages and relative composition for each community /land use type within the
vegetation study area are presented on the following table.
lant Community /Land Use Type Acreage % of Study Ar
Pasture 20.65 17.2%
Irrigated Hayfield 15.50 12.9%
Orchard 17.67 14.7%
Derelict 45.64 37.9%
Riparian !Wetland 1.00 0.8%
Residential /Industrial Facilities 19.84 16.5%
Total 120.30 100°'6
Flori:;tic surveys of the vegetation study area resulted in the identification of 31 speces of grass or
grasslike plants, 90 species of torts, and 43 species of woody plants for a total of 164 taxa (see Table
V2). None of these were determined to be sensitive, however, 11 species are designated noxious weeds
and an additional 22 are classified as invasive weed species. Furthermore, both quantitative and
qualitative investigations resulted in detailed descriptions for each plant community and land use type and
are presented in the following subsections.
3.1 Pashves
The pasture community type comprises 20.65 acres (17%) of the vegetation study area (See Map V-
1). Very little native vegetation exists in this community as introduced forage grasses and (orbs were
seeded in the pastures sometime in the past and continue to dominate the present vegetation cover. All
pastures a.re subject to various grazing periods, intensity and classes of livestock
•
•
•
Q.'SIDp@ ~1@IF:'9S Aee¢~no4aa, tic.
