2.04.3
The Gelwick mine is an old mine shown on the Bowie, CO quadrangle map.
It is located in the NW3 of Section 16. The mine operated in the A -Seam
from 1925 until 1939. Total production from the mine was 4,772 tons with
the peak production of 1,258 tons occurring in 1926. The thickness of the
seam was recorded as 4' -4'.
An unidentified mine is shown on the Bowie, CO quadrangle map. It is
located in the NW /4 of Section 14. Unsubstantiated records say it was
named the Blackburn Mine. No production information is available for this
mine.
The King Mine produced coal from 1903 to 1975. Based on the period of
operation, the mine initially mined with the pick- and - shovel method. The
early mine plant consisted of a stable, mules, blacksmith shop and a steam
plant and pump. In later years the coal was shot on the solid and loaded
with a mechanized loading machine. The coal was probably initially hauled
from the portal with wagon teams. The tramway from the mine was
• completed in 1907. A four track tipple was used to load the coal into rail
cars. The mine supplied coal to a mine mouth electrical power generating
station from 1922 until about 1949. The power plant supplied electricity to
the surrounding area. The King Mine produced from the B -Seam. Previous
operators of the property include Jack, Alex and Wallace Bowie 1903 -1917,
Juanita Coal & Coke Company 1917 -1974, Aldoph Coors Company 1974 -
1995. The following table presents the historical production from the King
Mine. A more complete history of the King Mine is presented in Exhibit 2,
Cultural Resource Inventory.
PR -12 2.04 -4 06/10
A PPQovED
1 1/1 4/1 fl
