2.04.4(1)
In a letter dated March 22, 2010 the State Historic Preservation Officer noted
that a search of the Colorado Cultural Resource Inventory database indicates
that several cultural resource inventories have been conducted near the
proposed (PR -12) project area and at least three historic properties are
located nearby. The sites include Site 5DT94: the Davis Homestead recorded
in 1977, 5DT95: the Morrell Homestead, recorded in 1977, and 5DT1538:
recorded in 2004. It was recommended that additional data were needed in
order to assess their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places
(NRHP).
Grand River Institute surveyed the sites in June 2010. The sites were
reevaluated and field evaluated as not eligible for listing on the National
Register of Historic Places and should be given no further consideration.
Considering the dilapidated condition of the sites, there should not be any
concern regarding the effects of mining- induced subsidence.
A Class III cultural resource inventory and paleontological assessment of
two block areas totaling approximately 505 acres (173 BLM, 332 Private)
of land related to portions of Federal Coal Leases (Mod COC -37210 and
Mod COC- 61209) was conducted by Grand River Institute (GRI). The
prefield check -in was conducted on the 22nd of August 2011 and fieldwork
was performed between the 23rd and 24th of August 2011. The fieldwork
was conducted by Carl Conner, Joshua Smith, Jim Conner, Dana
Archuleta. Lucas Piontkowski. and Travis Archuleta. Carl E. Conner,
Principal Investigator and Nicole Darnell prepared the final report.
The project identified and reevaluated one previously recorded site
(5DT88) within the inventory area. In addition a segment of a previously
recorded aqueduct (5DTI795.2) and three sites (50T1824, 50T1825.1 and
50TI826.1) were newly recorded. All of the sites were field evaluated as
not eligible and should be given no further consideration.
A paleontological assessment of the project area was made by a review of
the local geological formations to ascertain their potential to yield
significant fossil remains and a reconnaissance of the exposures within
the study boundaries. The formation exposed in the study area is the
upper Mesaverde. Mostly continental in formation, the upper Mesaverde
represents the last deposits related to the dominantly fluvial homogeneous
environment of the Late Cretaceous inland seas. Due to the lack of
recorded fossil findings in the upper Mesaverde, the potential for finding
fossils in this member is considered to be very low. As the majority of the
study area is covered in a blanket of soil and vegetation, few exposures of
PR -14 2.04-11- 06/14
