Site Description
1. Location and General Land Use Information
Exhibit B
The Cotton Wood Creek Fire Mitigation Project is located 7.9 miles southwest of Colona, CO on
Miraposa Road which is reached via Government Springs Road. The site is private ranch. The site is
not intended to be converted to a mining operation. A permit has been applied for to remove the
boulders generated during the fire risk mitigation project.
2. Site Geology
The areas exposed bedrock is Dakota sandstone along the steep slopes with some exposures of
Morrison Formation in the deeper portions of the drainages. Most of the flat areas and some slopes
are overlain by a thin sandy to silty material.
3. Surface Hydrology
Rainwater generally flows from the flat areas into the local drainages and then east to the
Uncompahgre River. Based on USGS mapping Cottonwood Creek is an intermittent drainage. A
stock pond exists the below the larger project area. No sediment is anticipated to leave the active
boulder removal area because vegetative buffers have been left inplace.
No irrigation ditches or other man-made waterways pass through the site.
4. Groundwater Hydrology
No ground water is anticipated to be encountered during the limited surface disturbance of this
project. Local wells are
5. Soils
A soils map and report have been included in Appendix A — Soils. The area has not been mapped by
NRCS but areas within a few miles of the site have been mapped and are representative of the project
area. Soils boundaries are along the transition from the flat areas into the drainages. The entire
permit area would be categorized as R3 -Rock Outcrop.
