Introduction
This Cottonwood Creek Fire Risk Mitigation Project site initially was part of the construction of a
parking area near a private garage and fire mitigation risk for a ranch property. The site is located
in Ouray County 7.9 miles south east of Colona, CO. The planned disturbance has been expanded to
9.54 acres to include additional mitigation areas surrounding the house and out buildings. The site is
principally oak brush slopes with Dakota Sandstone boulders scattered on the surface and partially
buried. In order to allow regular mechanical brushing of the area to provide fire breaks around the
structures, it was necessary to remove sandstone boulders. These boulders were principally used
onsite for construction of retaining walls and other landscaping features, however the number of
boulders removed from the mitigation areas exceeded the amount to be used onsite. The land has
found a market for these boulders and anticipates selling a few thousand tons of boulders per year. If
boulders were not removed from site and sold this project would not meet the DRMS' test of "Is It
Mining?". Activities will be limited to removal of boulders. No crushing, screen, or blasting is will
occur. Reclamation is limited to allowing the native vegetation to re -grow after the boulders have
been removed.
Cottonwood Creek Fire Risk Mitigation Project June 2015
