JUNE 17, 2015
1
Mr. Michael Cunningham
Division of Reclamation, Mining, and Safety
1313 Sherman St. Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Mr. Cunningham,
Since your office does not concern itself with comments related to noise, truck traffic, hours of
operation, visual impacts, effects on property values and other social or economic concerns, it appears
from your title that you do concern yourselves with safety. Therefore I will confine my remarks to the
field of safety.
The JRS Mining, LLC, from 850 N Davidson St, Eloy, Arizona, 85131, phone number: 863-660-0763 has
filed an application for a Regular (112) Hard Rock (Placer Gold) Operation Reclamation Permit directly
adjacent to much traveled Highway 9 and 200 feet from a long established residential area. This
Highway goes over Hoosier Pass to many ski areas including Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain ,
and Vail and the only mountain hospital located in Frisco.
My concern is with the location of this mine which is also adjacent to the Gloria Z Mine that has been
operating for quite some time intermittently to the west of this new applicant's land. This JRS Mine
would be right on the Highway. It's a strip mine, as I see it. And I repeat — right on the highway. There
is no buffer zone. How safe is that for passing motorists?
To add to the congestion there is a third mine directly to the south of the Gloria Z and will also connect
with this JRS Mine. That makes 3 mines within inches of each other. How safe is that for the
preservation of Highway 9, a main artery between South Park and Interstate 70?
Another safety concern would be an environmental issue which impacts motorists. There are huge
plumes of dust that are generated from the digging, and the prevailing winds would bring this hazard
right over the highway into the face of cars and trucks. In the interest of safety you cannot, in good
conscience, permit this mining operation to take place.
Sincerely,
