1 Introduction
The Cripple Creek Mining District is located in Teller County near Victor, Colorado.
Habitat Management, Inc., a Colorado Licensed Commercial Pesticide Applicator, has
developed this weed management plan on behalf of the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold
Mining Company (CC&V), a subsidiary of Anglo Gold Ashanti (Colorado Corp). This
plan was developed based on known site conditions to address the noxious weed
infestations on the mine property. Upon approval of this Plan, CC&V will implement the
conditions herein for the life of mining activities.
The mine is located between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor off of State Highway
67. The mine property is approximately 6,000 acres consisting of disturbed and
undisturbed land, mine facilities, active mining areas, drainages and waterways, topsoil
stock piles, and reclaimed lands. Under the Colorado Noxious Weed Act, CC&V is
required to manage noxious weed populations on mine property. To this end, Habitat
Management has developed an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach which
considers current site conditions, existing weed infestations, layout of reclaimed and
disturbed areas, access routes, vectors of weed dispersal, and other factors relevant to
weed management. This plan provides strategies to manage weed species that are
inhibiting revegetation efforts and affecting undisturbed lands on the mine property. The
goals for weed management at the mine are to:
1) Minimize the potential for the introduction and spread of noxious weed species;
2) Identify and manage noxious weed species on mine property using IPM methods;
3) Provide short and long term strategies for noxious weed management.
This plan includes four components:
1) A comprehensive weed survey including identification and mapping of weed
populations;
2) Preventative practices;
3) Management of noxious and nuisance weeds with mechanical, chemical, and
cultural methods;
4) An adaptive management strategy that includes continued monitoring to
determine treatment effectiveness and changes to the IPM approach as needed.
A list of noxious weeds know to be present on the mine is provided in Appendix A. This
list includes only known infestations, but does not include every species that could be
found onsite. A schedule of IPM tasks has been developed to address current infestations
and to prevent the spread of weeds as a result of mining and reclamation activities.
Reviews and updates to this plan will be completed as necessary to stay current with site
conditions and IPM priorities. A report summarizing the seasonal activities will include
details on the prior year's weed control efforts including a map(s) showing where
infestations of noxious weeds occur, a list identifying which weeds were treated, dates of
monitoring and treatments, tables of treatments (by acreage and method), and
Cresson Project Weed Management Plan
