Huddlestan-Betty
k r;,n: -pA Tc kj, LLC
1.0 INTRODUCTION
As part of their operations, Bowie Resources, LLC has been asked by the
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) to evaluate gob pile #1.
Huddleston -Berry Engineering and Testing, LLC (HBET) understands that the existing
face slopes along gob pile #1 are steeper than they were designed for. As a result, HBET
was retained by Bowie Resources to evaluate the stability of gob pile #1.
1.1 Referenced Documents
As part of our assessment, HBET reviewed the following documents.
• Stability Analysis for the Bowie Number 2 Mine Refuse (GOB) Pile near Paonia,
Colorado by Lambert and Associates, May 26, 1999.
• Geotechnical Engineering Field and Laboratory Study for The Coal Mine Waste
(GOB) Pile at the Bowie Number 2 Mine, East of Paonia, Colorado by Lambert
and Associates, February 24, 1999.
• Results ofAdditional Geotechnical Investigations for the Bowie No. 2 Mine Coal
Mine Waste Bank by WESTEC, February 12, 1997.
• Geotechnical Laboratory Testing, Proposed Gob Pile, Bowie No. 2 Mine, Bowie,
Delta County, Colorado by Maxim Technologies, Inc., January 7, 1997.
• Volume IV, Coal Mine Waste Bank, Final Design for the Bowie No. 2 Mine by
WESTEC, January 1996
1.2 Scope
As discussed above, the face slopes along gob pile 91 are steeper than designed.
Based upon cross sections provided by J.E. Stover and Associates (Stover), the slopes are
as steep as 1.5H:1 V. The purpose of our evaluation was to determine the stability of the
gob pile. The scope of the work included the following components:
■ Reviewing available data to define engineering parameters, piezometric
surface elevation, etc.
■ Setting up a model which represents the existing gob pile 91.
■ Evaluating the stability of gob pile 91.
The evaluation was completed by a Colorado registered professional engineer in
accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering practices. This report has
been prepared for the exclusive use of Bowie Resources, LLC.
2.0 BACKGROUND
The available reference documentation indicates that the original geotechnical
investigation for gob pile #1 was completed by WESTEC in 1996. Additional laboratory
testing and evaluation was completed in 1997 and 1999. The gob pile was originally
evaluated for slopes of 2H:1V. The prior stability analyses indicated that gob pile #1
would be stable at 2H: IV.
X:\2008 ALL PROJECTS\01349 -Bowie Resources, LLC\01349-0001 Bowie Mine\200 - Geo\Gob 1\01349-0001 R112114.doe 1
