Bowie Resources, LLC
Bowie No. 2 Mine
2013 Annual Hydrology Report Revised May 11, 2015
North Fork Alluvium Monitoring Wells
Alluvial monitoring wells AW -1 through AW -6 are located near the mine entrance along
the north side of Bowie Road. These wells are monitored quarterly for field parameters
and semi - annually for full suite laboratory parameters during the second and fourth
quarters in accordance with the permit application. Alluvial monitoring wells AW -7
through AW -9 are located near the mine entrance along the south side of Bowie Road.
AW -10 cannot be reliably sampled due to a collapse of the casing, and was eliminated
from the monitoring plan. These wells were installed as a requirement of PR -03 which
allowed the mine operator to relocate Sediment Pond B to the south side of the
highway. Alluvial Wells 11 through 13 were installed during the fall of 2000 to monitor
the alluvium in the area where the new coal loadout (PR -06) was constructed. Alluvial
well 13 was eliminated by the construction of the unit train loadout. Alluvial well 14 was
installed during 2003 west of Pond K. Alluvial wells 15 through 17 were installed during
the fourth quarter of 2003 and are located north of Bowie Road below coal mine waste
disposal area #2.
The 2013 sampling season provides results consistent with probable hydrologic
consequences provided in the permit application. Alluvial wells were installed to monitor
impacts that mine operations may have on groundwater. AW -1, AW -2 and AW -3 are
near the coal stockpile. AW -4, AW -5 and AW -6 are near gob pile No. 1. AW -7, AW -8
and AW -9 are located south of Pond B. AW -11 and AW -12 are below Gob Pile No. 3.
AW -14 is down gradient of Pond K. AW -15, AW -16 and AW -17 are below Gob Pile No.
2. All of the wells with baseline data have shown quality degradation over the years.
The coal pile leachate is likely similar to the water in alluvial wells AW -1, AW -2 and AW-
3 since the wells have been in place for a number of years. AW -7, AW -8 and AW -9 are
impacted by water seepage from Pond B. AW -11 and AW -12 are impacted by gob pile
leachate from Gob Pile No. 3. AW -14 is affected by seepage from Pond K. Alluvial
wells 16 and 17 have been affected by seepage from Pond F.
The following table presents a comparison baseline data and 2013 averages of the
required parameters for groundwater from rule 2.04.7(1)(a)(v).
E
pH
Su
TDS
mg /I
Conductivity
umhos /cm
Iron Total (TR)
Mg /I
Manganese (TR)
Mg /I
AW -1 Ave Baseline
7.2
8200
9100
0.41
0.03
AW -1 Ave 2013
7.1
3015
5000
0.57
0.03
AW -3 Ave Baseline
7.0
2415
3600
8.23
0.12
AW -3 Ave 2013
7.1
3043
3525
0.84
0.39
AW -5 Ave Baseline
7.2
5580
5450
0.11
0.01
AW -5 Ave 2013
7.0
4274
5300
0.22
0.03
AW -6 Ave Baseline
7.4
3995
4650
0.31
0.20
E
