• 11 ,
f
I
M S
is too wet can be detrimental to soil properties and further decrease reclamation success. A wet soil tends to
deform rather than shatter when decompacted which does not reduce compaction levels and can in fact
increase compaction and root limitations. Decompaction should be done as soon as possible at the site to allow
time for water to percolate through the soil and move salts to deeper depths.
i
Once the site has been ripped and the site should be seeded to a moderately tolerant saline seed mixture. A
proposed seed mixture can be found in Table 1. The seed mixture in Table 1 is based on saline tolerance of the
proposed species, identified grass species on the site, previous seeded plants and professional experience. It
may be necessary to change some recommended species due to seed availability. Seeding should be conducted
once soil temperatures have decreased to below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The entire site should be mulched with
2 to 3 tons per acre of straw. The main purpose of the straw mulch is to provide carbon to reduce the quantity
of plant available nitrogen in i he system. By removing the plant available nitrogen weed pressure should be
decreased for the newly planted reclamation grasses next spring.
It may be necessary to spray the site to help suppress some of the annual weeds this fall. If required it is
recommended that the site b` sprayed around the beginning of September with a good broad spectrum
herbicide. If sprayed at this time there should be adequate time for the plants to uptake and translocate the
herbicide to their roots. Spraying in the fall is a very effective control for tough to control perennial weeds such
as bindweed. j
Table 1.
