4.15 REVEGETATION <br /> 4.15.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS <br /> The Southfield Mine is in reclamation only status since operations permanently ceased <br /> in 2000. EFCI commenced reclamation activities at the mine site in 2001, demolishing <br /> surface facilities and sealing mine openings. By 2001, backfilling, regrading, and <br /> topsoil replacement was completed according to plans approved by the DRMS. <br /> Permanent seeding was completed on all reclaimed areas by October, 2003. Additional <br /> revegetation efforts including planting of shrubs and trees in selected areas of the <br /> reclaimed site during April, 2004. <br /> The coal loadout site located near Florence, Colorado, was similarly reclaimed in 1997, <br /> including permanent seeding completed during the same year. Due to poor response <br /> of the initial seeding, EFCI interseeded approximately 25% of the reclaimed areas in <br /> 1999. <br /> All presently or potentially disturbed lands in the vicinity of the Southfield mine and <br /> loadout areas were utilized as rangeland and wildlife habitat prior to disturbance. It is <br /> EFCI's objective to reclaim these areas to similar land uses and capabilities following <br /> reclamation. This will be accomplished by planting and managing those species that <br /> will achieve this purpose most effectively. The species selected are predominantly <br /> native species which are well adapted to site conditions, can be effectively re- <br /> established, and which have proven value as forage for wildlife and domestic livestock. <br /> All disturbed areas that will not be retained as access roads, impoundments or <br /> approved facilities in conjunction with the post-mining land use, will be revegetated. <br /> Revegetation methodologies have been selected which will result in effective re- <br /> establishment and productivity levels comparable to these which existed prior to <br /> disturbance. <br /> Species to be seeded and transplanted at the mine and loadout areas have been <br /> selected based on those species which can be effectively established and sustained on <br /> reclaimed mine lands, as documented by studies in the closely related areas of <br /> ecology and agronomy. These species will provide for rapid stabilization, prevent <br /> erosion, meet regulatory shrub density requirements, provide vegetative diversity, and <br /> 4.15-1 <br /> Revised 5/14/14 RN-06 <br />
