• Within the mine area, abandoned and flooded underground coal mines which <br />are utilized as groundwater supplies are located in the Rex Carbon Seam <br />which is approximately four hundred feet above the interval disturbed by <br />Southfield operations. Intervening low permeability strata provide an <br />effective hydrologic barrier to potential mining related impacts on this <br />groundwater source. <br />Similarly, the Trinidad Sandstone is located approximately four hundred <br />feet below the interval effected by Southfield operations. Similar <br />stratigraphic conditions preclude any significant extension of potential <br />groundwater impacts from Southfield operations on this unit. <br />Groundwater Consequences. Potential mining related groundwater impacts <br />will be limited to the strata actually disturbed by mining operations and <br />possibly perched groundwater reservoirs in the Vento Coal Seam, which is <br />approximately one hundred feet above the interval to be mined. It should <br />• be noted that groundwater resources in the Vento Seam have no history of <br />beneficial utilization in this area due primarily to depth of the Vento <br />Seam, water quality limitations, limited localized groundwater demand, and <br />the availability of suitable surface and groundwater resources from other <br />more accessible and consistent sources. <br />As discussed above and in preceding sections, probable groundwater <br />hydrological consequences will be confined to surficial colluvium /alluvium <br />in the Southfield loadout area and the interval disturbed by mining <br />extending up to and including abandoned mine workings in the Vento Seam <br />within the mine area. Probable consequences of mining and related <br />activities include the following specific impacts: <br />0 <br />0 <br />0 <br />0 <br />o <br />•0 <br />Minor Reductions in Down - gradient Groundwater Flows <br />Possible Dewatering of Abandoned Mines in the Vento Seam <br />Localized Reductions in the Piezometric Surface <br />Localized Alteration of Groundwater Flow Patterns <br />Possible Increases in Recharge as a Result of Mine Dewatering <br />Potential Increases in the Levels of TDS and Concentrations <br />of Specific Chemical Constituents <br />2.05.6 -40 <br />
