Pitch Reclamation Project Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board — 2014 Annual Reclamation Re
• Monitored of pit wall slopes on the south and east walls of the North Pit, the east wall of the South
Pit and the Indian and Tie Camp rock dumps;
• Monitored the groundwater levels in piezometers in the area of Pinnacle workings and monitored
springs and seeps potentially influenced by; the re- saturation of the historical underground
workings;
• Monitored piezometers in both the Indian and Tie Camp rock dumps;
I
• Monitored tension cracks above the east wall of the North Pit;
I
• Continued noxious weed control and continued removal of small pine trees that encroached on
the downstream face of the sediment control embankment;
• Monitored monuments and piezometers on the sediment pond embankment per the requirements
of the Colorado Division of Water Resources;
• Completed a land exchange effective January 30, 2014 with the Gunnison National Forest for
700.4 acres of federal land within, and adjacent to, the Pitch Reclamation Project. The land was
transferred to HMC as fee simple with both surface and mineral rights. Additionally, two 4000
gallon fuel tanks were removed from the Pitch s t ite and hauled offsite.
In 2013, the Water Quality Control Commission issued a Seasonal Type B Temporary Modification on
Segment 20 (Indian Creek). The modification was intended to provide sufficient time to determine the
"lowest practical level" (LPL) of uranium discharged to Indian Creek at the discharge permit point of
compliance (SW -33). In 2014, HMC implemented a plan to assess both natural and human - induced
sources of uranium to support evaluation of mitigation options that are practical and technically and
economically feasible. A conceptual site model (CSM) was developed for the Pitch Reclamation Project to
document the natural and anthropogenic sources of uranium as well as the geochemical processes that
control uranium concentrations within the Pitch footprint in surface water and groundwater. A summary of
the CSM was provided to the WQCD on August 12,:2014. The CSM was used as the basis for an
alternatives evaluation to begin determining the LPL and associated best management practices (BMPs)
that can be implemented to reduce the uranium loading to Indian Creek.
This information is provided for introductory purposes; details of 2014 monitoring, closure and reclamation
activities are presented in the following sections.
