Appendix 17 for TR -05
Item 1 - Inclusion of Thickener outside Filter Building
The proposed thickener will take tailings slurry directly from the mill through a pipe suspended
in an overhead support bridge and it will reduce the percent solids of the slurry from
I
approximately 30% from the mill flotation cells to 50 -60% solids. This higher density slurry will
then go to the filter presses already located in the upper floor of the filter building where the
filters will reduce the water content to 14 -17 %. This material will fall down into the two lower
filter bays and will be loaded with a small font end loader and taken to the tailings disposal areas
for compaction and permanent placement. The thickener is therefore used to provide a 1St stage
of dewatering of tails so that the filter presses can operate more efficiently and get the water
content of the final tailings in the acceptable range for good compaction on site, which is in the
approximate range of 13 % -17 %.
As shown in the attached thickener drawings, the thickener will be located outside but near the
filter building and will be placed above a large concrete foundation of 6" thick reinforced
concrete walls and floor. All thickener drawings are labelled as TH -1 through TH -11. The details
of the foundation for the thickener are shown on Drawings TH -5, TH -8, 9, 10 and 11 in this
Appendix. Drawing TH -11 shows how the footers of the thickener will be solidified to bedrock,
which is only 2 -3 feet from the surface in the thickener area ' "The thickener itself will be
constructed from steel panels which are welded together. The structure will sit on steel beams
which are located on footers within the containment concrete . The drawings show the details of
the footer design.
The thickener is 26 ft in diameter and 8 feet deep. The total height of the thickener from the
ground is 15 ft. The volume of the thickener is a maximum of 4400 cubic feet of slurry. The
concrete containment is bigger than the thickener itself and will handle a minimum of 110% of
the full volume of the thickener. Based on the footprint area of 1693 sq. ft, as measured from the
I
attached design plan view of the foundation, and using a wall height of 3.0 feet, this results in a
containment volume of 5079 cu. Ft. Since there is approximately 200 cubic feet of structures in
