The proposed site is located on a dry rocky hill with very
little vegetation.
White tailed prairie dogs were seen on a site inspection. Prairie dogs create habitat
necessary for burrowing owls and are an important food source for raptors and small
predators in the area. Low densities of Gambels quail, mule deer, songbirds and other
species of small mammals are likely to be present on occasion as well.
This proposal states that the site would be an open pit mine, and would utilize front loaders
or excavators to load the aggregate into trucks or crushers. There will be some habitat loss,
fragmentation and increased disturbances from vehicle traffic and human activity. Given
the extent of the prairie dog colonies in the area east of Delta and the low density of prairie
dogs on this particular site, we do not see the overall impacts to wildlife as significant to the
overall population.
Again, thank you for the opportunity to comment.
