The actual live rate amount is
determined based on each season's available seed and tested germination rate. For example, 2008 available seed had
a live rate of 95% for Thickspike and Mountain Brome. But for bluegrass and blue grama live rate was 85 %. Colo -
Agra, from whom I order the approved seed, prepares the proper mix based on its live rate and percentage of seed to
meet the required percentages. For example, total pounds per acre may be 53 lbs to account for live rate and gramma
could be 12% content based on its live rate in order to yield the USFS recommended 10 %.
Each site is reseeded according to the area of actual disturbance. For example, if Site 001 on Silver Microcline
reaches maximum size of 1,600 square feet disturbance, then I should use 1.47 lbs (plus a fraction to allow for live
rate). In the example above, it would be 1.95 lbs.
I reseed at a rate which exceeds USFS standards. Additionally, each site is reseeded until adequate growth is
achieved. If a site does not show good growth the following spring, it will be reseeded. Progress is tracked in yearly
prospecting reports.
B. Describe the method for seed bed preparation, and application method for grass /forb seeding:
All sites are prepared by raking with the backhoe or excavator bucket to break up the soil and provide small furrows
for trapping and holding seed and water. Seed is broadcast after the fast frost and before the first major snow
(hopefully) to ensure adequate moisture for early spring germination.
