addition, if groundwater has the potential to flow into or out of the pit, then the suitability
of the quarry as an unlined reservoir is called into question.
The Applicant has not provided any information to substantiate the claim that the
observed water is part of a localized groundwater table. In order to satisfy the Division's
concerns, please provide copies of the borehole logs for the boreholes referenced in the
Brierley Associates' letter, as well as a borehole profile cross - section. In addition, provide
the Division with well data for the surrounding area or any other available information to
demonstrate the observed groundwater is not connected to the regional groundwater table.
See Brierley Associate's revised letter attached to this adequacy response.
3. The Summary of Groundwater Conditions at Ralston Quarry letter from Brierley
Associates stated there were temporary groundwater monitoring wells installed at borings
BA4 and BA-6. Please indicate if these temporary groundwater monitoring wells are still
in place and provide the Division with any available monitoring data from the wells. \
Given that there is no ground water that will be encountered as part of the mining at the Ralston
Quarry, there is no need for monitoring data.
4. Please respond to the attached comments from Tim Cazier regarding the stability
analysis.
See the specific items and responses below.
Tim Cazier Item 1.
July 22, 2014 Letter, Section 1.2 — This could be just a matter of semantics, but the text:
"Brierley analyzed three- dimensional wedge failures that could occur based on various slope
configurations to achieve a minimum allowable FOS of 1.3 for wedge stability" implies analyses
were evaluated until the minimum FOS was achieved as opposed to evaluating multiple slope
configurations to ensure the lowest FOS was at least 1.3. Please confirm that no proposed, final
slope configurations were analyzed that resulted in a FOS less than 1.3.
See the April 2, 2015 Brierley letter attached to this response.
Tim Cazier Item 2.
July 22, 2014 Letter, Section 1.4 — Map C -4 created by Greg Lewicki And Associates
indicates there will be a north dipping bench (south highwall of the pit, Section B -B). The
results table in Section 1.4 of the July 22, 2014 Brierley letter does not provide results for a
north dipping analysis. Please address the FOS for the north dipping slope.
Map C -4 has been revised to reflect the April 2, 2015 Brierley letter. This letter incorporates data
for north dipping slopes.
2
