PERMIT #: M- 1977 -325
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: TC1
INSPECTION DATE: June 19, 2014
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the regular monitoring program. Messrs. Joe and Matt Welte were
present for the inspection, representing the Operator (Summit Pressed Brick & Tile Co.). This is a 110c clay
mine. The mine was not operating at the time of the inspection.
The Cherokee Clay Mine is approximately five miles southwest of Florence and is accessed from Fremont Co
Road 84.
Inspection:
A permit sign was posted near the site entrance (see Photo 1). The permit area boundaries are marked with
T -posts (see Photo 2). The highwall on the north end of the pit was observed to be no steeper than 3H:1V
(see Photo 3). A topsoil stockpile was observed on the northwest corner of the site (see Photo 4). Clay
stockpiles were observed in the center of the pit (see Photo 5). Mining activity appeared to be recent at the
time of the inspection.
Hydrology — Stormwater is trapped in the pit, upgradient of stockpiled clay material or behind berms
separating the mine from County Road 84 (see Photo 6). The Operator indicated the stormwater
management plan is kept on file in the Pueblo office. No groundwater or captured stormwater was observed.
No oil or fuel spills were observed.
Noxious weeds — A significant amount of bindweed was observed on the west side of the site. As this is a List
C species, no problem was cited, but the Operator should try to control the spread of bindweed.
Reclamation activity — The Operator indicated the south slope had been sloped and seeded, but the brush was
voluntary (see Photo 7).
Records:
• The total permitted area is 9 acres.
• Revisions:
• Technical revisions — Technical Revision 1 changed the mining and reclamation plan, and eliminated
the requirement to backfill the pre -1976 overburden in the southeast portion of the permit as
approved on 1/10/2002.
• Transfers —the operation was transferred to Summit Pressed Brick & Tile Co. on 9/9/1999 (SO -02).
• Surety adjustments — The financial warranty was last increased in 2003 to the present $18,500 (SI-
02).
• The previous inspection was performed on 11/20/2009. No problems were cited.
• The anniversary date is November 23. Annual reports and fees are current through 2014. The 2014
annual report indicated 4.0 acres had been affected.
• The post -mine land use is rangeland, per the October 5, 2001 adequacy response to TR -01.
Current Stipulations: None.
Bond:
The currently held bond is $18,500. This bond is based on a maximum disturbance of 8.4 acres. The financial
Page 2 of 7
