Peabody Sage Creek Mine
SL -3 Phase III Bond Release Request
July 2014
three. There are three spoil wells above Spoil Spring 3: SSP59, 60, and 61. Well SSP61 is sampled
for water quality; only water level data is being collected at the other two. All seven spoil wells
will be removed after CDRMS approval of this bond release application.
Four bedrock wells were drilled by the USGS in 1987 upstream of Pond 004. They are: 1) Well
CL2 (30 feet deep, completed in the Lennox coal), 2) Well Cl2 (70 feet deep, completed in the
Lennox /Wadge interburden), 3) CW2 (90 feet deep, completed in the Wadge coal, and 4) Well
CU2 (122 feet deep, completed in the Wadge underburden). All wells are two inch diameter PVC,
and all four are normally flowing. All four wells are capped and pressurized with nitrogen gas to
prevent freezing in the winter.
Four bedrock wells were drilled by the USGS in 1987 downstream of Spoil Spring 4 (Spring
Creek area that eventually flows into Pond 002). They are: 1) Well SL2 (58 feet deep, completed
in the Lennox coal), 2) Well SI2 (80 feet deep, completed in the Lennox /Wadge interburden), 3)
SW2 (98 feet deep, completed in the Wadge coal, and 4) and Well SU4 (105 feet deep, completed
in the Wadge underburden). All wells are two inch diameter PVC (except for SU4 which is four
inch diameter). All four are normally flowing but are capped and pressurized with nitrogen gas to
prevent freezing in the winter.
Water quality and completion information for these eight USGS wells may be found in the USGS
Open File Report 92 -122; and USGS Water - Resources Investigation Reports 92 -4067 and 92-
4187. These wells were apparently last sampled by the USGS in 1989. These wells will be
removed using well abandonment procedures approved by the CDRMS after approval of this
bond release application.
The drainage channels and stock ponds that will remain in the Phase III bond release area are
those that have been previously approved for permanent retention in TR -37 (2006) and PR -2
(2010) for the Seneca II Mine and are shown on Map 2.05AM1 (2010) of the PSCM permit.
Exhibit 13 -2A (updated in 2009) in the Seneca II Mine permit, also illustrates the approved
permanent features. These permanent features are shown on Map 2 accompanying this
document. Pond 004 which is adjacent to but not included in this Phase III bond release was
34
