PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF STUDY
This report presents the findings of a gravel deposit study at the Blue Valley Ranch, 6915
Highway 9, Grand County, Colorado. The project site is located just off of Highway 9
about seven miles south of Kremmling, Colorado as shown on Figure 1. The purpose of
our study was to assess at a reconnaissance level if a gravel deposit suitable for use in the
proposed Highway 9 upgrade is present on a high -level river terrace at the ranch. Our
study was preformed generally as described in our August 19, 2014 professional service
agreement with Galloway, Inc., DBA Blue Valley Ranch.
A field reconnaissance of the potential borrow site was made on August 26, 2014 to
observe the site and geologic conditions related to a potential gravel deposit. Following
our field observations, seven exploratory backhoe pits were excavated and sampled at the
potential gravel deposit site. Samples obtained from the exploratory pits were tested in
our laboratory to determine the gravel deposit gradation and abrasion resistance. This
report summarizes the information developed by this study, describes our evaluations and
presents our findings.
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
It is likely that the Blue River alluvium that underlies the high-level river terrace (map
unit Qtl on Figures 2 and 3) is of sufficient quantity and quality to be use in the proposed
upgrade of Highway 9. The general soil profile below the high -level Blue River terrace at
the potential borrow site is; (1) thin overburden loess over, (2) around 10 to 20 feet of
Blue River alluvium over (3) a marine shale. As the highway project proceeds, a borrow
pit specific study should be performed to verify the reconnaissance level findings
presented in this report.
Job No. 114 342A G&Ptec(h
