3/24/2015
State.co.us Executive Branch Mail - Fwd: Magpie Seep
SATE, OF Rodriguez - DNR, Mary <mary.rodriguez @state.co.us>
COLORADO
Fwd: Magpie Seep
1 message
Alysha and Mary —
Please file this email as General Documents /Public Correspondence.
Doc Name should be "Email from Dr. Corley ".
Thanks,
Me
---- - - - - -- Forwarded message ---- - - - - --
From: W D Corley, Jr. <ajjc @att.net>
Date: Thu, Apr 17, 2014 at 7:12 AM
Subject: Magpie Seep
To: Rob - DNR <rob.zuber@state.co.us >, George Patterson <efcoal@gmaiI.com>
Rob and George,
I have read the DRMS directive about the reclamation of the developed seep in the Magpie Diversion, and a
have a couple of thoughts. I have written in the past that this developed seep is directly above the westerly
edge of the old Monarch Mine which may be full of water, and the seep would be over the deepest part of that
mine which means that the water pressure would be the greatest at that point. I do not know the vertical
distance from the seep down to the Monarch Mine, but I could measure some surface elevations and utilize
approximate pitch and directions of the Monarch coal seam to arrive at an estimate. If the construction of the
Magpie Diversion simply allowed the Monarch Mine water to flow to the surface, then there is a real problem if
the water is toxic. Since this water has never been tested as far as I know, it would be far easier to first test
the water. If it meets groundwater standards it would seem to me that no further action would be required. In
fact, good water would be a big asset. If it does not meet standards then removing the culvert or filling the
culvert does nothing to correct the surface release water as a result of the construction of the Magpie Diversion.
W.D.
