Keenesburg Mine 2014 Vegetation Monitoring Report
5.2.3 Species Composition
A total of seven life forms and 19 species contributed to the cover data (Table 4) and 30 species
were encountered along the transects (Appendix A). Of the species contributing to the cover
data, 12 were grasses and seven were fortis, 16 were native and three were introduced (Table 6).
Perennial species outnumbered annual species by eleven to eight. Both warm and cool season
grass species contributed to the cover, but warm season species outnumbered cool season species
by eight to four.
A total of eight species contributed more than 3% of relative cover (Table 4) including three
warm season perennial native grasses, one cool season annual introduced grass, one cool season
annual native grass, one annual introduced forb, and two annual native forbs. These species in
rank order (highest to lowest) include: sand dropseed, cheatgrass, sand bluestem, prickly lettuce,
prairie sandreed, Canadian horseweed, sixweeks fescue (Vulpia octoflora), and Cuman ragweed
(Ambrosia psilostachya).
Table 6: Reclamation Area 30 Species Composition
Life Form
Cover
Data
Present
Graminoids
Perennial
9
11
Annual
3
3
Native
11
12
Introduced
1
2
Cool Season
4
6
Warm Season
8
8
Total
12
14
Forbs
Perennial
2
2
Annual
5
10
Native
5
8
Introduced
2
4
Total
7
12
Woody Plants
0
2
Succulents & A avoids
0
2
Total Species
19
30
5.3 2014Revegetatlon Success Standards
Using the September 2013 through July 2014 precipitation (17.46 inches) in the predictive
equations presented in Section 3, the following standards were calculated for vegetation cover
and herbaceous production.
1. Vegetation Cover Standard = 37.39%
2. Herbaceous Production Standard = 232.62 g /m2
Habitat Management, Inc. 12 September 2014
