Keenesburg Mine 2014 Vegetation Monitoring Report
represents 154% of the average precipitation amount for the same period (1993- 2013). Not only
was this period unusual in the quantity of precipitation, but the timing was also unusual (Figure
3). September 2013 brought several consecutive precipitation events totaling over 300% of the
average September precipitation and resulting in major regional flooding. Precipitation in
January and May 2014 was also more than double the average, and above average rainfall
occurred in June and July of 2014 as well. However, April precipitation was only 28% of
average.
Figure 3: 2013 -2014 Precipitation and Average Annual Precipitation
5
4
3
U
C
O
}8.. 2
it
—2013 -2014 Precipitation — —Average (1993 -2013
Sep
5 RESULTS
Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar
5.1 Reclamation Area 30
a
\
s
Apr May Jun Jul Aug
Reclamation Area 30 is a 9.68 -acre parcel that was formerly part of the B Pit mining area. This
area was graded to blend into the undisturbed area to the west and the reclaimed mining and
operational areas to the east resulting in a gentle east - facing slope. Final revegetation seeding
with the DRMS- approved permanent seed mixture took place in November 2006.
5.1.1 Vegetation Cover
Total vegetation cover on Reclamation Area 30 averaged 46.8% (Table 1) which represents a
large increase from the 28.8% observed in 2012. However, total native vegetation cover was
only 21.8 %. Because cheatgrass is listed on the Colorado noxious weed list, it was removed from
Habitat Management, Inc. 7 September 2014
