Louis Head
Page 2
February 19, 2015
d. 0.0 acres were topsoiled during 2014
e. 0.0 acres were seeded during 2014
f. No maps were enclosed with the 2014 report. The most recent ARR map is from
2012 which can be viewed in conjunction with the table from that report to see
when different areas were seeded. The map also shows areas where gullies were
repaired.
Weed control through 2014 comprised bi- weekly inspections for the presence of noxious
weeds, including Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense) and Houndstongue (Cynoglossum
officinale).
Control of weeds was achieved by hand spraying infestations with Tordon. This is the
product name of a herbicide produced by Dow Chemical, the active ingredient of which
is Picloram. It is an appropriate choice to treat the species mentioned, although should
not be used near or under trees where soils have rapid permeability or where the water
level is high, due to its relatively high persistence and mobility.
Rill and gully inspections were completed at the same time as the weed inspections.
Ditches and culverts were cleared of sediment and repaired as necessary. Erosion on the
reclaimed slope above Pond 6 using sediment removed from Pond 6. Breaches along the
west ditch line above Pond 6 that caused the erosion were repaired and nine inch straw
wattles were placed on contour along the face of the slope. The impacted areas were
inter - seeded.
The difficult work described in the 2014 ARR has been documented in inspection reports and will
continue to be closely monitored by the Division.
Sincerely,
Leigh Simmons
Environmental Protection Specialist
