zo
habitat than any other feature of the mine. They should be located
as far as possible from streams in order to protect the sensitive and
important riparian zone for the benefit of both wildlife and fish.
Provisions should be made to control erosion from pile and road drain-
age. This is a matter of both design and reclamation. Recommended
reclamation procedures based on Colorado State University studies should
be followed with respect to slope grade, use of topsoil, fertilization,
seeding, etc. It is important that desirable food and cover species,
including shrubs, be included in planting mixtures.
The Picketwire and Stonewall Valleys, where the Maxwell and Allen

mines are located, provide a good environment for fish and wildlife.
The sites have productive soils, favorable climate and natural diversity
These attributes make it feasible to take actions that will reduce
adverse effects on fish and wildlife and that can mitigate unavoidable
impacts.
