The native vegetation Se mainly pinyon, juniper,
l~ and rasa. .Elevation ie 6 500 to 7 800 feet. The avers a annual
g g precipi-
cation is about 14 to 18 inch ea, the average annual air temperature 1s 47
~.
l
to 52 degrees F., and the average frost-free season is 115 to 135 days.
- This unit is 40 percent Louviers very channery clay loam, 20 percent
Rombo st~:iy clay loam, and 15 percent Travessilla channery loam. Louviers
and Rombo soils are on very sCeep side slopes. Rombo soils are limited
to north-facing slopes. Travessilla soils are on ridges.
In eluded in.chis unit are 10 percent Prieto loam and 10 percent Rock
1 _
` outcrop. Prieto soils occur on broad ridge tops and have a developed
subsoil. Rock outcrop occurs as bands of sandstone rear the crest of si~
..J slopes. Also included are small areas of Fort Collins loam at the base
of the side slopes. The Fort Collins soils are deep to bedrock.
f _
The Louviers soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in residuum
:• and colluvium derived dominantly from shale. Typically the surface layer
is very channery clay loam 4 inches thick. The upper 9 inches is shaly
clay over interbedded shale and silcstone at a depth of 16 inches. The
soil is neutral throughout. Shale fragments range from 10 [0 50 percent
in the substratum. Depth co shale bedrock ranges from 10 to 20 inches.
_ Permeability of the Louviers soil is moderately slow. Available
water capacity is very low. Effective rooting depth is 10 to 20 inches.
~ Runoff is very rapid and the hazard of eater erosion is very high. .
-
. ~_ _--.. ~.marusc~..~ti~-"'c/.i.a:~iR'..~++~.~'....-.-.~-~m+isYU~[mi
