Dear Jim,
Enclosed is some information on soils, vegetation and reclamation you
requested for the site located in the SE 1f4, NE 1t4, Sec. 5, R80W, T12S,
6th Principal meridian in Chaffee County Colorado.
This site is located 7.5 miles west of Granite, Colorado at an elevation of
approximately 12,000 feet. Your location is outside the area of our
Chaffee County soil survey and there is not any soils information available
for your locality at this time. If you would require an on -site soil
investigation, I could arrange to schedule one for this full. However,
since the majority of your operation will take place on a site that is
already disturbed, I do not think that an on --site soil investigation is
needed.
Although the soils in and around your site are shallow, any topsoil
encountered should be stockpiled and saved for future reclamation work.
We have enclosed two plant inventory lists (CC-ECS -2), one for the
disturbed site and one for the undisturbed site. These lists represent the
plants found on the sites as of 7- 10 -92.
When reclamation of the site begins, areas to be seeded should not have
slopes steeper than 3 to 1. If possible, south facing slopes should not be
greater than 6 to 1. The seedbed should be smooth and fine with any
compacted areas ripped or chiseled (if this is feasible) before seeding.
Seeding of the site may be accomplished with the enclosed seeding
recommendation on form CO- ECS -5. This recommendation is based on the plan#
inventory found at your site (see CO- ECS -29). This recommendation used
species that are native to the site. Instead of the above recommendation,
many area seed companies self high altitude or alpine seed mixtures which
may do very well for your reclamation work. The enclosed seeding rate is
for brgaJeast seeding only. If the seed is dri l ed, use 1f2 of the
recommended seeding rate.
In addition to the above recommendations, the seeding may be enhanced by
the use of fertilizers, mulches and manure. The amount of fertilizer
applied should be determined by a soil test. However, nitrogen can be
applied at a rate of at Ieast 50 pounds per acre and phosphate at a rate of
