Southfield Vegetation Standards
TR-45 January, 2015
data collected from the three reference areas located at the Southfield Mine site in 2013
and excluding these three species, resulted in revised woody plant density values of
17.99, 424.17 and 22.01 woody plants per acre being obtained from the sampling of the
Refuse Pile Reference Area, the New Portal Reference Area, and the Old Portal
Reference Area, respectively. The weighted average value for the 2013 woody plant
density sampling was 464.17 plants per acre.
The 2014 bond release sampling of these same three areas resulted in revised values of
163.52; 235.78; and, 81.47 woody plants per acre being sampled in the identical three
reference areas, which result in a weighted average value of 480.77 woody plants per
acre. Therefore, based upon these data, EFCI is proposing an average value of the 2013
and 2014 woody plant densities as the ultimate revegetation woody plant density value.
Thus, the overall weighted average value relative to the woody plant at the Southfield
Mine would be a woody plant density revegetation success standard of 472.47 woody
plants per acre.
Relative to the weighted average woody plant density value for the two different
reclaimed areas, the weighted average reclamation woody plant density value will be
calculated based upon the weighting factors associated with the respective size of these
two reclaimed areas. The area of the Refuse Pile Reclamation calculated in the 2013 and
2014 revgetation monitoring efforts was 46.78 acres, the area for the Vento Portal
Reclamation was determined to be 10.22 acres, which yields a total area of 56.60 acres.
Therefore, the revised woody plant reclaimed weighting factor will be 0.8265 for the
Refuse Pile Reclamation and 0.1806 for the Vento Portal Reclamation. Thus, in the
determination of the final woody plant weighted average for the Southfield Mine site, the
average woody plant density for the Refuse Pile Reclamation will be multiplied by a
factor of 0.8265 and for the Vento Portal Reclamation, by a factor of 0. 1806, and these
two resulting values will be summed into a final woody plant density figure. For
purposes of statistical analyses, both the mean and standard deviation values for these
two reclaimed areas will be multiplied by these factors.
The final revegetation success standard with respect to woody plant density values for the
combined reclaimed areas at the Southfield Mine will be considered to be successful,
when reclaimed area woody plant density value exceeds the calculated reference area
weighted standard 472.47 woody plants per acre. If the overall weighted average woody
plant density counts from the reclaimed areas associated with the Refuse Pile reclamation
and the Vento Portal reclamation exceed this value, then the woody plant density
standard will be considered to be satisfied.
0
