useful in controlling wind and water erosion. This combination of species will also provide <br />acceptable forage production for wildlife and domestic animals. <br />The species selected for use in riparian areas are based on known performers that can be <br />successfully established. The 1981 vegetation inventory of the Deserado mine area included one <br />stand (041) that was in a bottomland location. Species composition for this stand as: 42% perennial <br />grass, 14% annual grass, 42% perennial forbs and 1% annual forbs. Total vegetation cover was <br />20 %. <br />The recommended seeded species shown on Table V -12 are all perennial grasses. The objective <br />is to establish a cover of perennial grasses to stabilize the area. Native grasses, forbs, and shrubs <br />will naturally fill -in the areas not occupied by the planted grasses. <br />The establishment of woody plants in riparian areas in combination with perennial grasses will <br />further help to stabilize the site. Plantings should be located in pockets and strips along <br />streambanks, shorelines, drainage inlets and outlets, wetland areas and floodplains. The woody <br />plant species identified on Table V -12 are readily established using dormant cuttings from adjacent <br />wetlands. <br />Reclamation Success Criteria <br />The wetland area to be reclaimed is less than five acres. This area will be highly influenced by <br />Kenney Reservoir. The rise in water level has created a riparian environment at the alluvial well <br />area. BME did not collect baseline riparian vegetation data since none existed at the time of <br />construction. In order to have a standard for reclamation comparison purposes at the end of the <br />mine life, BME will establish a reference area at least 1 acre in size near the alluvial well area. This <br />reference area has not been determined. It will be established in consultation with the Colorado <br />Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS). <br />The reference area will probably change dramatically over the mine life. Since the vegetative cover <br />will transform naturally from a high alluvial dry land cover to a wetland type cover, exact standards <br />for reclamation success cannot be determined today.
