Barrow Homestead — a 20th century, seasonal, high - altitude subsistence
homestead and /or cow camp (Baker 1977). The cabin is located on the north
side of the West Fork of Terror Creek in a meadow at 7560 feet in elevation.
Newly noted aspects of the site included: a rusted 55- gallon drum filled with
modern trash located west of the cabin; a one -hole privy or outhouse located
southeast of the cabin; and, the remains of a pole structure that appears to
be the remnants of a canvas cabin -tent frame located near the creek
southeast of the outhouse.
The cabin can be located on Map 27. It located on the mid point of the
south line of section 31, township 12 south range 91 west. Site 5DT96 will
not be disturbed by surface disturbance associated with exploration holes or
methane drainage wells (GVBs). However, since the cabin sits over the
mine workings it could be damaged by stains induced by subsidence.
Horizontal strain is a measure of the change in length of a piece of ground or
structure. Damage to surface structures is frequently a function of horizontal
stains.
The cabin measures approximately 12 feet E -W by 15 feet N -S and is
constructed of aspen poles. The cabin sits approximately 1,335 feet above
the coal seam. Building damage from stains is proportional to the size of the
building. The small flexible cabin should not be affected by strain caused by
subsidence.
Site 5DT698 the Hughes Cow Camp Cow camp and recreational cabin was
originally recorded by Steve Baker of Centuries Research in1984 (Baker
1984). It was later revisited by J. Firor and J. McGuire of Alpine
Archaeological Consultants in 2005 ( Firor 2005). The site is located on the
west side of the East Fork of Terror Creek at an elevation of 7200 feet.
Vegetation consists of native grasses, riparian growth dominated by narrow
leaf cottonwood, and spruce /fir forest.
Site 5DT698 will not be disturbed by surface disturbance associated with
exploration holes or methane drainage wells (GVBs). The cabin is outside
the projected angle of draw so it will not be affected by subsidence.
Site 5DT1719, is a prehistoric open camp, originally recorded by John K.
PR -14 2.05-140 03/14
