• <br />5.0 ?Fine Portal Reference Area Description <br />• <br />5.1 ?^.ine Portal Site Description <br />The mine portal is located on the east edge of the permit <br />property at the head of a small drainage area. The area has <br />been extensively disturbed by both the present operation and <br />past operations. <br />A reference area adjacent to the mine portal site on the <br />west side was established. The vegetation in the reference site <br />is similar to that found in nondisturbed sites which are similar <br />to the mine portal area. The reference area will be fenced to <br />protect the vegetation from damage from grazing cattle. <br />5.2 Sample Adequacy <br />Sampline was done according to the methods described in unit <br />2.0. A total of 60 samples were taken. The minimum number of <br />samples needed was 31 as described below. <br />Total average basal vegetation cover 19.1 percent <br />Standard deviation 7.35 <br />Number of samples taken 60 <br />Number of samples needed 20 <br />5.3 vegetation Summary <br />The vegetation found on the reference site is composed of <br />a three-layered woodland-shrubland with open areas of grassland <br />vegetation. The dominant species of the three layered woodland- <br />shrubland area are as follows (Tables 4 and 5 ). <br />Juni~erus monos erma <br />0. 7 percent basal cover <br />107L frequency <br />Pinus edulis <br />O.TO percent cover <br />3.3 Percent frequency <br />•, <br />Pinus onderosa <br />0. 9 percent basal cover <br />5.0 percent frequency <br />2-30 <br />
