Ponderosa Pine - Douglas Fir forest. During the summer and fall of 1989,
EFCI contracted with GEM Consulting to conduct a field review of
vegetation types within the Southfield mine area to determine if
additional vegetation types might be included within the expanded permit
boundary which is a subject of this permit revision. This review
confirmed the vegetation types and locations as originally described by
Keenan in his October, 1980 report included as Exhibit 11, Vegetation
Inventory, with one minor exception. This exception occurs in the extreme
southwestern portion of the Southfield mine area where one (1) additional
vegetation type was identified. This vegetation type, known as the
Ponderosa Pine-Douglas Fir Forest, will not be disturbed by mining
operations. Following is a brief description of this vegetation type.
This vegetation type is found in two (2) minor areas along the
southwestern boundary of the Southfield mine permit area. It occurs on
steep slopes at elevations of greater than 6,800 feet and is dominated by
• a dense overstory of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine. Because of the dense
overstory which characterizes this vegetation type, the understory is very
sparse and is comprised primarily of shrub and forb species also found in
the adjacent Ponderosa Pine-Pinyon-Juniper Woodland vegetation type.
Southfield Loadout Vegetation
The Southfield Loadout area is located west of Florence, Colorado, at
elevations ranging from 5,220 feet 5,260 feet. The entire area is
represented by the Grassland vegetation type previously described. A
detailed description of vegetation found in the Southfield Loadout
vegetation can be found in Exhibit 11, Vegetation Inventory.
Reference Areas
In order to adequately evaluate the success of permanent reclamation,
reference areas were established to represent the disturbance areas at the
• Southfield Mine and Loadout. Only two (2) vegetation types have been or
are projected to be disturbed. At the mine site, the mine portal area
will primarily affect the Ponderosa Pine - Pinyon - Juniper Woodland
2.04.10-3
