6 - 14
8) Reinforcement — when using standard-strength filter fabric; a
wire fence reinforcement may be used. The fence should be
fastened to the upslope side of the posts using heavy duty wire
staples, tie wires or hog rings. The wire should extend into the
trench a minimum of two inches and should not extend more
than 36 inches above the ground surface. The wire fence may
not be necessary when extra-strength fabric is used.
9) Height — the height of the filter fence should be a minimum of
18 inches and not to exceed 36 inches.
10) Installation — the filter materials should be stapled to the posts
using heavy duty wire staples at least one-inch long. Eight
inches of fabric should extend into the trench.
When a fence is constructed across a shallow ditch or swale, it should be long
enough to eliminate end flow, with the plan resembling an arc or horseshoe
with the ends oriented up slope.
Maintenance
Sediment deposits should be removed after each storm event. Deposits
should be removed when they reach approximately one-half the height of
the filter fence. In situations where access is available, machinery can be
used: otherwise it must be removed manually. The sediment should be
placed in an area where there is minimum erosion.
Removal of filter/silt barrier
Generally, filter fence should be removed once vegetation has been
established. The sediment should be spread, seeded and protected
(mulched) immediately.
