Humidity cell testing(HCT)
HCT using ASTM D5744-13 is the most widely used test to mimic natural oxidation reactions of the field
setting. The HCT was designed to enhance or accelerate the rate of acid generation in sulfide-bearing
materials. HCT tests better evaluate variables such as reaction rates and the availability of neutralizing
alkalinity at mid-range pHs over ABA testing. Two samples were selected for HCT.
Since the rock unit Creede Formation comprises the larger percentage of material in the WRSF, it was
selected for testing(Sample F1391-051113). The Portal+1391-ft sample also showed the most
uncertainty related to acid generation potential according to ABA testing results. This test was
conducted for a period of 23 weeks and is summarized below. pH ranged from 4.52 to 5.36 during the
test showing an increasing trend in the last few weeks of testing. Sulfate concentrations decreased over
the course of testing.Acidity and alkalinity were detectable for the duration of the test. Iron
concentrations were relatively stable. Conductivity generally decreased during testing. Redox values did
not reach levels associated with pyrite oxidation.
HCT Test Results
F1391-051113
Effluent Redox Conductivity Total Fe Sulfate Acidity Alkalinity
Week pH mV µS/cm mg/I mg/I mg/I mg/I
0 4.92 199 761 2.54 380.0 24 2
1 4.93 222 586 0.64 270.0 16 2
2 4.89 230 367 0.34 130.0 9 1
3 4.93 223 286 0.28 120.0 8 1
4 4.83 258 325 0.40 120.0 10 1
5 4.66 265 307 0.32 110.0 15 1
6 5.01 281 252 0.55 70.0 12 1
7 4.91 303 279 0.70 100.0 12 1
8 5.02 238 262 0.83 100.0 12 2
9 5.13 244 219 0.81 50.0 12 2
10 5.02 265 245 1.20 80.0 14 2
11 4.52 223 206 1.06 60.0 13 1
12 4.88 241 214 1.40 40.0 11 1
13 4.57 306 226 1.61 70.0 18 1
14 4.67 179 193 1.52 60.0 13 3
15 5.09 332 209 2.01 50.0 15 2
16 5.18 344 173 1.46 50.0 13 2
17 5.34 307 165 1.38 60.0 16 3
7
