May 1999 S <br />Fnergy Fuels Coal, Inc. 1998 Amw&I Hydrology Report <br />Monitoring data for both upstream and downstream locations is available for, at most, only <br />1 1/2 years through the period of this report. Additional monitoring will allow better <br />comparison of data and assessment of potential impacts from mining. <br />The approved surface water monitoring program effectively monitors the impacts of mining <br />operations on the surface water system adjacent to the Southfield Mine and loadout site. <br />Monitoring of two sites on Newlin, Magpie, and Oak Creeks will provide useful data <br />concerning potential mining impacts. Monitoring data documented through the period of this <br />report indicate no significant impacts to surface water as a result of mining operations. <br />Field and laboratory data collected from monitor wells MW-8, MW -10, MW -16, MW -23, <br />and MW-65 are summarized as described below. All data was collected in compliance with <br />the approved monitoring program. <br />Water quality data for wells 10, 16, 23 and 65 are shown on Tables 5, 6, 7 and 8, <br />respectively. Water quality samples are not obtained at MW -8 as described in the permit <br />application. As mentioned in the previous AHR, MW -10 was mined - through. Observations <br />during the period of this report show the well is dry and draining into the mine. <br />A review of monitoring data for each well through the period of this report indicate that <br />water quality data are consistent with previous reporting periods. Water quality in MW -16 <br />and MW -23 are consistent with previous reporting periods. At MW-65, the data shows a <br />moderate increase in the amount of nitrogen ammonia and chloride. Additional monitoring <br />will show if this is a sustained trend. Water quality in all wells remains within acceptable <br />ranges for material damage criteria. <br />Well levels for all monitoring wells are summarized on Table 4, and water level data are <br />presented graphically for the five monitor wells on Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. <br />A review of water levels data shows steadily declining water levels at MW -23; seasonally <br />fluctuating levels at MW -16; and stable levels at MW-65. Well MW -8 was mined - through in <br />1993 and immediately went dry. Subsequent monitoring showed that the borehole had <br />collapsed to a point 336 feet below the surface. The water level recovered and has gradually <br />increased from the 280 foot level since early 1996. This sustained recharge of the well may <br />indicate that sub - surface conditions have stabilized. <br />The approved ground water monitoring program adequately monitors potential impacts of <br />mining on the ground water system. The data collected through the period of this report <br />indicate that no significant ground water impacts have occurred as a result of mining. <br />
