2. Groundwater Elevations
Groundwater elevations will be monitored as described in the Groundwater Monitoring &
Response Plan prepared by others under separate cover. Refer to groundwater monitoring plan
developed by others. During groundwater recovery periods, cottonwood tree health will be
monitored as described in this monitoring plan.
Mitigation
In the event that adverse effects to cottonwood trees near the Las Animas River are discovered
as a result of the monitoring efforts detailed in this plan, the following mitigation measures are
proposed:
1. During the dewatering period, an irrigation plan can be implemented to supplement the
natural precipitation that the trees are receiving. Supplemental irrigation will be delivered
to the trees exhibiting signs of drought stress in an attempt to lessen the adverse effects
caused by dewatering activities.
2. If groundwater has not recovered to pre - drawdown conditions and /or local groundwater
elevations, cottonwood trees within the drawdown area will be irrigated once per month
with the equivalent of 1/2 inch of water if equivalent natural precipitation has not occurred.
If normal, natural precipitation is occurring, irrigation will not be necessary. Additionally,
when groundwater elevations have recovered to pre - drawdown elevations, or elevations
consistent with local groundwater elevations, irrigation will not be required.
3. In the event that drought stress is observed during the groundwater recovery period after
dewatering activities have ceased, continued irrigation of cottonwood trees may be
necessary until groundwater elevations have been restored.
