• Ru[r 2: Prrmifs <br />Grassland Disturbed Area <br />Within the proposed disturbance areas dominant perennial grasses included blue grama and red <br />threeawn at 14.8 and 2.0 percent cover, respectively. Common perennial forbs included fringed <br />sage (2.8 percent cover) and spreading fleabane (Erigeron divergens) (1.2 percent cover). No <br />annual forbs were encountered during the point-intercept measurements. Broom snakeweed <br />dominated the woody stem density count in this area. Litter comprised 47 percent of the entire <br />transect cover. Rock comprised a minimal amount of the overall cover, while bare ground <br />accounted for 19 percent of the total cover. The disturbance area's cover was found to be very <br />similar to the reference area's cover and, thus, the null hypothesis was accepted. <br />Shrub density for the disturbed area was calculated to be 96 woody stems per hectare. This area <br />was not within a 90 percent confidence level for shrub density as compared to the reference area. <br />Production in the disturbed area totaled 122.36 pounds per acre. This measurement was found <br />to be within a 90 percent confidence interval for production as compared to the reference area. <br />Grassland Reference Area <br />Within the reference areas sampled, dominant perennial grasses included blue grama and natrow- <br />• leaf sedge at 8.3 and 4.8 percent cover, respectively. Common perennial forbs included trailing <br />fleabane and hairy goldaster. Annual grasses included cheatgrass and annual forbs were <br />dominated by dandelion and black medic. Broom snakeweed dominated the woody stem density <br />count in this area. Litter comprised 50 percent of the entire transect cover. Rock comprised a <br />minimal amount of the overall cover, while bare ground covered about 16 percent of the total <br />cover. <br />Shrub density for this disturbed area was calculated to be 97.14 woody stems per hectare. <br />Production in the disturbed area totaled 138.03 pounds per acre. <br />These grasslands are scattered in and among the coniferous forest, mountain shrub, and <br />oak/pinyon pine communities. They are naturally dry and tend to be found on valley floors or <br />mountain benches where soils are deeper. Graminoids dominate the grasslands, but a large <br />number of forbs is also present. The dominant grass species was blue grama (Bouteloua graci[is). <br />Associated graminoid species included needlegrasses (Stipa sp.), mountain muhly (Muhlenbergia <br />montana), prairie junegrass (Koleria macrantha), wheatgrasses (Agropyron sp.), and bluegrasses <br />(Poa sp.). Dominant species of forbs included western yarrow (Achilles lanulosa), fringed sage <br />(Artemesia frigida), and trailing fleabane (Erigeron flage[[aris). Some pockets of shrubs occurred <br />within these grasslands. Snowberry (Symphoricarpos rotundaflorus) dominated slight depressions <br />that capture and hold snow for long periods in winter.
